Welcome to our Science program for 2026.

I warmly welcome all families, with a special greeting to our Prep and new families joining the Science program this term.  All our students will enjoy learning through exploration, experiments and hands-on activities.

The Science Curriculum is divided into 4 strands Physical Science, Biological Science, Chemical Science and Earth and Space Science. This term our students will focus their learning on Biological Science.

Here is a snapshot of what our scientists will be up to this term.

Preps

Students are exploring the characteristics and needs of living things, focusing on minibeasts and plants. They took a guided walk around the school to identify and sort living and non-living things. They enjoyed creating a home for our snail family and watched how they move and eat

Students also enjoyed their first school excursion to the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens, where they had the opportunity to closely observe compost worms.

Year 1/2

Students will investigate the many ways animals and plants can be grouped. Students will observe and compare plants in the school garden, using their senses to identify features like colour, texture and size. Students will explore the parts of plants such as roots, stem, leaves and flowers, and categorise plants based on shared characteristics. They will take part in experiments to observe the different roles each part plays in the growth of a plant. They will also participate in planting in our school garden.

Year 3/4

Students will investigate living, non-living and once living things. They will come to the understanding that fossils were once living things. Students will participate in a ‘Cookie Excavation’ activity where they experienced what it would be like to be an archaeologist.

Students will learn about living things and their life cycles. The students will develop a deeper understanding of metamorphosis and the fascinating changes some animals go through compared to non-metamorphic animals.

Year 5/6

Students will investigate how physical conditions of the environment affects the survival of living things. Students will inquire into how bushfires occur, how they affect living things, and how people prepare for and respond to them. They will probe into organisms that live in extreme environments. Students will also learn that changes in physical conditions affect the behaviour and survival of living things, in their biomes. They will also explore how humans may have a negative and positive impact on the environment.
