Implementing School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) at Ormond Primary

We’re excited to share that Ormond Primary School is beginning implementation of the School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework this year.

SWPBS is a well-established, evidence-based approach used in schools across Victoria and around the world to build a positive, safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment for all students and staff.

What this means for our school community:

  • We’ll be focusing on teaching and supporting positive behaviours in a consistent and supportive way.
  • The framework helps strengthen students’ social, emotional and academic outcomes. Teachers and students will use clear expectations and shared language around behaviour, just like we explicitly teach academics.
  • We’ll use data and observations to guide decisions and make improvements that benefit everyone.
  • SWPBS is a long-term whole-school approach that aligns with our values and supports the wellbeing, learning and success of every student.

What we have already done on our SWPBS Journey:

  • Been selected to have in Inclusion Outreach Coach (IOC) to join OPS for 6 months to assist with implementation.
  • Appointed a SWPBS Leader – Mr Joshua Woollan – to lead the collaboration of the SWPBS Team and wider school community.
  • Developed a SWPBS Team – consisting of Mr Joshua Woollan, Mrs Effie Liararkos, Ms Eleanor Weaver, Ms Nicole Lichoudaris, Mr Aaron Jones and Ms Anna-Marie Yelland (in the future, we will ask for a community member to also join the team).
  • Ran student-focus groups to get student voice and agency around behaviour and positive behaviour supports.
  • Developed consistent major and minor definitions of student behaviour.
  • Developed a consistent approach to supporting student behaviour, with implementation to starting from the start of Term 1.
  • Developed a data collection tool to track and analyse student behaviour, with implementation starting later in Term 1.
  • Started professional learning on pre-emptive strategies to promote positive behaviour in our learning and social spaces.
  • Developed resources, consistent routines and lesson plans to explicitly teach the expected behaviour in all areas in all classrooms.
  • Develop an Action Plan to ensure that regular review occurs to give students multiple exposures, spaced retrieval, and positive priming

               of expected behaviours.

We have had an amazingly calm, orderly and productive start to the school year and we want to thank our students for learning, practicing and executing these routines and showing us such positive behaviour to start the school year.

We look forward to working together with students, families and staff as we continue this important journey toward a positive and respectful school culture.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
