Let the Games Begin! Athletics Day Is Fast Approaching – Thursday 5 March

A reminder to families that notices for our upcoming Whole School Athletics Carnival were sent home last week.

All students will attend the carnival at the Joe Carmody Track on Thursday 5 March as part of our Sport and Physical Education program. This is always a highlight of the school year, providing students with the opportunity to participate, challenge themselves, and earn valuable house points.

Key reminders:

  • Please ensure that consent and payment for the event is provided via Compass at your earliest convenience.
  • Students should wear their house colours, along with suitable footwear, a broad-brimmed hat, and weather-appropriate clothing.
  • Students need to bring sunscreen, lunch, snacks (with ice packs), and plenty of drinks.
  • Pizza Roll lunch orders can be placed via Compass Canteen and must be submitted by 11:45pm Saturday 28 February (no late orders accepted).
  • Families who are available to assist on the day are warmly encouraged to contact the school office — your support makes a big difference.

We look forward to a fantastic day of participation, teamwork, and house spirit!

Making a Splash Beyond Our School

In our previous newsletter, we shared how proud we were of the 30 students selected to represent Trafalgar Primary School at the Warragul District Swimming Competition. We are now excited to provide an update on their outstanding performances.

Our students achieved an excellent set of results at District level, bringing home multiple ribbons across individual and relay events. Highlights included first-place finishes to Ted Cheatley (9/10 Boys Butterfly) and Eloise Griffin (9/10 Girls Butterfly), along with numerous podium finishes across freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly events.

Our relay teams were also a major strength on the day, with several teams finishing in the top three, including second-place finishes in both the 9/10 Boys and 9/10 Girls Freestyle Relays, as well as the Mixed Age Girls Medley Relay.

A particularly exciting milestone was that 11 students qualified for the Divisional Swimming Competition — the largest number of TPS qualifiers in over 10 years. This reflects both the depth of talent in our squad and the strong effort shown by our students throughout their swimming program.

At Divisional level, our students again represented the school with pride. Notable results included:

Havana Brown — 3rd in 11 Girls Freestyle

Jack Wheller — 3rd in 9/10 Boys Butterfly

Eloise Griffin — 3rd in 9/10 Girls Butterfly

9/10 Boys Freestyle Relay Team — 3rd place

Beyond the ribbons and placings, we were most proud of the teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship shown by all students across both competitions.

Congratulations to every swimmer who represented our school — your efforts in and out of the pool were outstanding, and you should be very proud of your achievements.

Hockey Roadshow Brings Fast-Paced Fun to Grade 3–4

On Wednesday 18 February, our Grade 3 and 4 students enjoyed an exciting introduction to hockey through the Hockey Victoria Roadshow Program.

The sessions provided a safe, fun, and highly engaging entry point into this Olympic sport. Students quickly learned how to handle hockey sticks, control the ball, and apply basic skills through a range of fast-moving, game-based activities. A clear highlight was the ever-popular “Sharks and Fish” game, which had students laughing while developing their agility, awareness, and teamwork.

It was wonderful to see students enthusiastically embracing a new sport, supporting one another, and building confidence as they practised their skills. The Roadshow also helped connect interested students with opportunities to continue their hockey journey through local club programs.

Foundation–Year 2 Students Building Strong Foundations in Gymnastics

Our Foundation–Year 2 students have made an energetic start to their gymnastics program, delivered in partnership with the Leongatha Gymnastics Club and supported through the Gymnastics Australia Sporting Schools initiative.

Across the first two sessions, students have been developing their fundamental movement skills through a variety of engaging activities and equipment circuits. These sessions have focused on building balance, coordination, strength, flexibility, and body control — all essential foundations that support participation across a wide range of sports and everyday physical activity.

It has been fantastic to see students demonstrating persistence, confidence, and a willingness to challenge themselves while learning new skills in a safe and supportive environment.

We look forward to the final two sessions, where students will continue to refine their skills and build on the strong foundations already established.

AFL Superkick Program Off to a Strong Start

Our AFL Superkick Program is already well underway, with students having now completed the first two sessions of this exciting four-week opportunity. Across the opening weeks, students have enthusiastically developed their fundamental football skills, including kicking technique, handballing, spatial awareness, and game sense through engaging, high-energy activities.

It has been fantastic to see such strong participation, teamwork, and positive sportsmanship on display, with many students showing growing confidence and willingness to challenge themselves.

Music Update

Instrumental lessons

Our 4 instrumental teachers all have vacancies. So, it’s not too late to sign up for the Instrumental program and get your form in to begin extracurricular, individual lessons on a music instrument with a professional musician.

You can find a full description of the instruments we offer, price, photos and bios of all the teachers, and a digital instrumental music form here - TPS Music site/Instrumental. You can also pick up a form from the front office, or just outside the music room at the Instrumental Form letter box. Return it to the front office or into the box and we can start one on one lessons as soon as possible.

Choir

The choir meets every Thursday, second half of lunch (2PM).

During the year we will work on songs that will be performed at assemblies, instrumental concerts and finally, The Trafalgar Carols.

You don't need any singing experience. It costs nothing. You don't need to sign up. Just attend regularly if you love to sing.  We have chosen our first song - Ordinary by Alex Warren.

Celebrating Community: Grade 6 Rotary Award Parent Information Night

A big thank you to all the Grade 6 parents and carers who attended our Rotary Junior Community Award Parent Information Night. It was wonderful to see so many families there and to share more about the opportunities the award provides.

We are excited to get started, with our first student meeting taking place next week on Monday at lunchtime. This will be a short check-in session to outline expectations, answer student questions and begin planning next steps.

If you were unable to attend the information night and would still like to learn more, please feel free to get in touch or arrange a time to meet with me. I’m very happy to talk through the award requirements, expectations and how students will be supported throughout the process.

We’re looking forward to another fantastic year of Grade 6 students getting involved in the community and building valuable life skills.

The Arts Are Alive!

Hi!

We’re Isla and Alexa and we are the TPS Arts Captains of 2026! Let us tell you a bit about ourselves.

  • Hi, I’m Alexa and my favourite subject in art is grey led drawing. I had one of my artworks in the Tanjil Valley Art Show in 2025.

  • Hi, my name is Isla and my favourite subject in art is papier mache. Last year I made one, it was an octopus!

This week our art classes have been in the ALC due to some flooding from the recent big amount of rain, but it has all still been very fun, and all grades have been doing different things.

The Foundation students have been here for four weeks now and so far, so good. They have been newly introduced to the art room rules and routines and have been learning about the Primary colours and identifying colours on the colour wheel.

The Grade 1/2's have been reviewing primary and secondary colours and looking at warm and cool colour schemes with a focus on space and planets.

The Grade 3/4's have been focusing on design elements of value, to create a 3D rainbow hand. That will look really cool, can't wait to see them!

The Grade 5's have looked at value and are starting to learn about shading with grey lead to recreate black and white photos, so far so good.

And Grade 6's have been looking at monochromatic colour schemes with a focus on line and form to create a black and white painting based off lino prints. There are a lot of tiny details that we have to do, and it takes a lot of patience!

In conclusion, art has been very different the past few weeks due to the water damage, but we are all still having a great time in the ALC. We look forward to talking about the art room in 2026!

Kind regards,

Isla and Alexa

Grade 6 is Looking Sharp!

We are all super excited because our Grade 6 Uniforms have arrived! Now younger students will be able to recognise us in the yard wearing our black tops.  We have a new design this year, so if you see us around you can see what they look like!
