Last week we celebrated Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. It was lovely to celebrate as a school with a Liturgy.

Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday marks the day before the beginning of Lent and falls on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It is a special day in the Church’s calendar. The word “Shrove” comes from the ancient Christian practice of shriving, in which individuals confessed their sins and received absolution. Through this sacrament, we experience God’s mercy, are forgiven, and are freed from the burden of sin.

At the same time, Shrove Tuesday is traditionally a day of joyful preparation. As Lent is a season of prayer, fasting, and sacrifice, this day became an opportunity to use up rich foods such as eggs, butter, and sugar — which is why it is often known as Pancake Day.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the sacred season of Lent in the Church. On this day, Christians receive a cross of ashes on their foreheads. The ashes are a special sign of repentance. They remind us to say sorry for our sins, to turn our hearts back to God, and to try our best to make better choices.

Lent is a meaningful time in our Church year. It invites us to grow closer to God through prayer, to practise self-discipline through fasting or making small sacrifices, and to show love and compassion by giving to those in need.

As a school community, we look forward to journeying through Lent together, supporting our students as they grow in faith, kindness, and generosity.
