It has been a fun-filled Term 1 in Science, and we are just over halfway through what has already been an exciting and hands-on term across all year levels.

Year 7 students have built strong foundations this term, learning laboratory safety, how to correctly use a Bunsen burner, and proudly earning their Bunsen Burner Licences.

Year 8 students showcased their creativity and content knowledge through a Molecules Poster Task, clearly demonstrating the differences between elements, compounds and molecular structures.

Year 10 Biology students modelled protein synthesis using lollies to represent the different components involved in transcription and translation — a memorable (and engaging!) way to bring a complex process to life.

Year 11 Biology students completed a rat dissection to observe mammalian systems firsthand, deepening their understanding of structure and function across organ systems.

Year 12 Chemistry students have been busy in the laboratory producing bioethanol and biodiesel, applying their understanding of organic chemistry in real-world contexts.

Our senior students have also had exciting learning experiences beyond the classroom.

  • Year 12 Biology students attended workshops at Casey Tech, where they investigated Huntington’s disease. Students carried out a patient history using a nursing robot, ALEX, and applied PCR and gel electrophoresis techniques to test, predict and diagnose both the patient and family members.
  • Meanwhile, our Year 12 Physics students visited Luna Park to analyse the Newtonian motion of rides throughout the park, connecting classroom theory to real-world physics in action.

We also have some exciting excursions coming up:

  • Year 12 Environmental Science – Melbourne Zoo (Friday 27th March)
  • Year 12 Psychology – Ways of Knowing (Wednesday 22nd April)

To support our senior students, help sessions continue to run throughout the week:

  • Monday lunchtime (A12) – Year 12 Psychology
  • Tuesday Period 0 (8:00–9:00am, A3) – Year 12 Chemistry
  • Wednesday lunchtime (A20) – Year 12 Biology
  • Wednesday lunchtime (A3) – Year 11 Chemistry

It has been wonderful to see students engaging so actively in their science learning this term. We look forward to finishing Term 1 strongly and sharing even more achievements in the coming weeks.
