This week in Grade 1/2, we have continued to practise our spelling each morning with extra focus on how we sit while we are handwriting. We aim to become “happy handwriters”, which means sitting properly with two feet on the floor, our backs straight and a good pencil grip. We have been learning about the Rabbit Rule this week, as well as the use of the magic e to make a vowel say its name. We have been paying close attention to how we write and edit our sentences. A strong focus on capital letters, punctuation and the use of interesting verbs has improved our writing. We have looked at different sentence types this week: statements, questions, commands and exclamations. We have identified them and added the correct punctuation to these sentences, as well as written our own. In Mathematics, we have been learning about Place Value. The students have been using physical materials to see and understand how numbers are made up, using base-10 blocks to practise regrouping. We have had lots of fun playing place value games this week to consolidate our understanding. Our Inquiry unit focuses on health and wellbeing, and this week we learned about low, medium and high impact physical activities.
