Professional Learning: Neuroaffirming Practices

Teachers are provided with a Professional Practice Day each year to engage in professional learning in an area of teaching and learning aligned with our school priorities. This year, staff identified neuroaffirming practice as an area they wanted to strengthen to better support all learners in our classrooms.

To support this learning, the school engaged developmental psychologist Sandyha Menon to facilitate a two-hour professional learning workshop for our teachers and education support staff. Sandyha also happens to be a parent within our school community.

The workshop explored current research relating to Autism and ADHD, helping staff build their understanding of the diverse ways students may think, learn and communicate. It also challenged some common misconceptions and encouraged reflection on how we can create increasingly inclusive and supportive learning environments for all students.

The session provided valuable opportunities for staff to reflect on their classroom practices, with many already implementing new strategies to support student engagement and participation.
