In Term 3, Foundations students will focus on the element of form and texture as we start to explore textile projects. They started by creating threading cards inspired by 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar', creating fruits and leaves that we used as an introduction to sewing. This week they have been working on a sewing project with needles and wool to create a heart design. This challenging project has been embraced by the Foundation students, with great attitudes and resilience.
Year One and Two students have worked hard to complete their paper flower gardens, drawing designs and cutting out complex shapes from their painted papers. Students had to plan their pieces to create different heights and colours as well as making sure to include things that help their garden like sun and insects. This week students had a go at drawing with depth. Using a guide, they were able to draw a group photo of animals, making choices about what information would be hidden behind someone in the front of the picture. They will continue to focus on depth and form in their work in the term to come as they explore sculpture in the coming weeks.
Year Three and Four students added some finishing touches to their Olympic athlete sculptures, adding colour and drawing details to communicate their chosen sport. We then moved on to textiles, using the work of Australian artist Pete Cromer as inspiration for felt softies. After having a go at a draw along project to get them used to the style, each student chose an animal and designed details they wanted to add in the style of Cromer's collage work. Students have been creating templates and cutting felt to prepare their details before we jump into sewing the halves together in the coming weeks.
Year Five and Six students have finished up their onomatopoeia Pop Art collages, adding unique details to help them communicate the sound in picture form. It was great to see some think out of the box with zippers, pom pom bees and curly tails as their imaginations took hold.
Students looked at contemporary Pop Artist Romero Britto. His bright and colourful work was inspiration for their own drawings, using bold black lines and bright patterns to create an eye catching piece.
The USPS art captains, along with some helpers, have been undertaking a side project to add even more colour and fun into our school. We look forward to sharing progress photos with you throughout the project.
