National NAIDOC Week

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. This year's theme is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud. As NAIDOC week falls during the school holidays, Mazenod celebrated with a range of activities this week.

We started off with a staff Aboriginal-inspired morning tea, which was provided by the boarding students and chef. Wednesday morning was the NAIDOC Mass, followed by the traditional NAIDOC assembly in where the students were welcomed with a Smoking Ceremony and Traditional Welcome to Country by local Nyunger man Trevor Stack. The students were inspired by our special guest speaker Liza McGuire (Bidjara, Ghangulu and Iman women) who spoke about her success and breaking down barriers as an indigenous businesswoman.

The 3 indigenous football jumper designs were presented to the college, and Anthony C (Y7) was named the winning artist. All three boys Lyndon C (Y7) and Merrick L (Y8) received their very own jumper with their designs. The winning design was worn by all Mazenod players for the first inaugural NAIDOC football match, which was held that afternoon against Governor Stirling High School. Unfortunately, Governor Stirling walked away with the win, but overall, it was a great competitive game. Mazenod would like to thank Governor Stirling for their kind gifts which were made and painted by their very own indigenous students.

To wrap up the week's celebrations, the students took up the opportunity to leave a handprint on a large canvas print that was painted by Todd P (Y10) and Ethan M (Y10). Thank you to Ms Hughes, Mrs Botica, Ms McKechnie and Mrs Cream for organising such a great activity. While the painting activity was underway the boys experienced the taste of Kangaroo Stew that was provided during lunchtime.
