Inaugural NAIDOC Football Match

As part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, we held our inaugural NAIDOC football match against Governor Stirling High School on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mazenod players were proud to wear their newly designed Indigenous jumpers which were designed by Anthony C. The teams got off to a great start with some early goals, heading into halftime with both teams on 3 goals 1.

With a couple of late goals by Governor Stirling the final score was Governor Stirling - 7 goals 7, and Mazenod 5 goals 10. Congratulations to Governor Stirling for the win and thank you for the special gifts that were presented to our College.

Thank you to the boys and staff who helped to make this game such a great event, and we look forward to next year!

Floyd Cup Report

STAFF vs YEAR 12 Students

The annual staff vs students Floyd Cup competition has seen the students claim victory with a 3-2 win. The competition namesake this year is Mr Tom Floyd, an ex-teacher whom the seniors wanted to honour.

Round 1 was Volleyball. Captain of Sport, Michael O enlisted a Year 12 team that was simply no match for the might of the Mazzaroos! 2 sets to love!

Ms McKechnie’s creative flair extended to the court where her passes were surgical. Mr Kitscha threw the kitchen sink at the Year 12s, Mr Tuohy made it look effortless, Mr Migro jumped up for a spike and rumour is he still hasn’t landed, and Mr Poletti hasn’t stopped smiling since his wedding. All this spelt trouble for the 12s.

For Round 2, we had a game of Basketball. Although the staff were winning early, the students came to play and were helped by some questionable tactics that Coach Bulich was heavily involved in for the students. Pass it to Alex P and let him shoot, pretty good tactic though as he wasn’t missing.

Hollywood loves a good comeback story, and the staff unleashed their new secret weapon, Miss Hodgson who was speeding around the court, stealing the ball and scoring at will. Alex P is still going through the ‘Lost Property’ looking for the ball after it was taken away from him without a clue.

Captain of Sport, Michael O, assembled a rag-tag bunch who were building the new gym with the number of bricks they were throwing up, so they changed their strategy and started passing to Alex P watching him sink 6 3-pointers and carrying them to victory.

Our staff were fantastic though. Mr Migro channelled Superman by jumping over everyone. Mr Alexander had very sharp elbows. Mr Kitscha figured out which way we were going, Mr Poletti played out of his skin and Miss Hodgson played with the silky precision we have become accustomed to. The clear highlight of the game was the last 5 seconds when “Hodgy” was on the bench, yet miraculously subbed in and scored a half-court shot right on the buzzer, whipping the heaving gym audience into a frenzy!

Round 3 was Ultimate Frisbee which was played at frenetic speed. The disc was flying across the oval and sometimes it even “boomerang-ed” back to the thrower. Students won by two touchdown thingys.

Round 4 was Indoor Soccer and the gym was rocking with a wild audience appreciative of the efforts from both sides. Unfortunately, the staff were up against Real Madrid and couldn’t beat the talented Year 12s.

With the series score at 3-1, the students could not be beaten. This displeased the staff, so it's a good thing the final round was a game of Dodgeball! Round 5 got off to a great start with some miraculous catches and marvellous dodgers. Soon enough, more and more Year 12s joined the game with most defecting to the staff team to play against their mates. Staff won and made the series score respectable at 3-2.

Thank you to Mr Walczak and Michael O for organising the series and to all the staff and Year 12s who participated. The staff have already sussed out the competition for next year and they feel are feeling pretty confident…
