Year 10 Work Experience
Student Reflections
Our Year 10 students participated in Work Experience earlier this term - here are just some of their wonderful reflections:
I spent my work experience week at Bupa Aged Care, specifically in the area of personal care. I was lucky enough to meet many residents, hearing their life stories and advice for the future. Learning how to provide care to residents in the dementia ward was a valuable and eye-opening experience, showing me the importance of treating the elderly with dignity and respect. The staff at Bupa exhibited kindness and care for their residents, and overall, it was a wholesome learning experience for us all.

I completed my work experience at The Riverine Herald Echuca. It was a very interesting way to get to know lots of things about where we live. Over the course of the week, I went to eight different places and learnt how to interview people and what to take notes on in order to write a story. I also got to interview a new Australian citizen to write a short article for Wednesday’s paper. I think that work experience is a great way to learn lots about the work force and to test things out, even if you are not 100% sure on what you want to do. I really enjoyed my time at the Riv.

During my year 10 work experience at Northern Constructions Group as a project manager/engineer, I found the experience to be both enriching and enjoyable. The team from the office, including Monique, Matt B, Trent, Steve, Nathan, Murray, and Matt H, made me feel incredibly welcome and created a friendly and supportive environment. Their sense of humour added a delightful touch to the learning process. Additionally, I had the opportunity to gain valuable insights from Stevie, Tony, Hoppo, and Matt P, who generously shared their knowledge and expertise in the construction industry. Their guidance and mentorship were truly valuable, and I feel fortunate to have had the chance to learn from such a dedicated and knowledgeable team.
I had the privilege of gaining a comprehensive understanding of the financial, logistical, and practical aspects of project management during my time with the team. They graciously provided me with a hands-on experience, allowing me to observe their day-to-day operations, and also allowing me to accompany them to various job sites, providing valuable insight into the intricacies and complications involved in overseeing major construction projects.
This experience has deepened my interest in pursuing a career in the field of engineering/project management and has provided me with a strong foundation for my future endeavours. I had a lot of fun both in the office and outside at the various sites that I was fortunate enough to visit. One really funny moment was when Murray thought it would be a great idea to smash a solid block of melted chocolate with a hammer. It was totally unexpected and had everyone cracking up.
The hands-on experience I gained, the valuable mentorship I received, and the positive environment have solidified my passion for this field and affirmed my career aspirations. I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences that have shaped my career path and look forward to what is to come for me in the future. I highly encourage future year 10 students who are considering a career in project management or engineering to consider Northern Constructions. The support and expertise that the team has offered me has been invaluable.

Recently I had the wonderful opportunity of completing the year 10 work experience week at Bupa Aged Care Echuca. Four St Joseph’s students and I were warmly welcomed with smiles and many stories from the residents at the home. Each day brought new and exciting experiences including being alongside nurses, and carers from the lifestyle unit. I especially enjoyed the lifestyle component, which involved things like assisting with bingo, mini golf, gardening and ten pin bowling. Shadowing nurses provided insights into the nursing profession and the dedicated care provided to residents. Overall, it was a valuable week and one that I would certainly recommend for students doing work experience next year.
