Online Parliamentary Convention
On the 13th & 14th August a number of students from SCSC attended the Online Secondary Schools Parliamentary Convention , hosted by the Victorian Schools Parliamentary Program (VSPP).
The VSPP provides immersive opportunities that support the civic learning and active participation in democratic processes of all Victorian students through local, state and national parliamentary programs and in-school activities.
SCSC students met with 13 other participating schools to debate the topic ‘Should Technological Advancements such as AI be incorporated into the classroom. The students were given the opportunity to present a 2 minute opening statement on their stance, before being put into groups with students from the other schools to debate this topic.
This was a great event! A big thank you to Finley M, Skye G, Matilda S, Taitum M and Zebe H for representing the school!
Student Testimonies:
TAITUM & MATILDA: "The Parliamentary Convention was an enjoyable experience where students from 13 different schools got together over zoom to debate the topic ‘Should technological advancements, such as AI, be incorporated into the classroom’.
Together with the other students, we were able to find and share our stance on the topic. It was a valuable opportunity to meet others with similar interests from around Victoria. We got to hear from some important guest speakers over the course of 2 days, who shared their knowledge on the topic and helped to guide us in the final division. In the final vote, 75% of participants voted for AI in classrooms, with the remaining 25% voting against. This altered slightly from the original 81% for AI and 19% against."
ZEBE: "It was a fun day getting to hear everyone’s points of view, and see the vast spectrum of arguments shared. One of the guest speakers we were lucky enough to see was the shadow minister Jess Wilson. It was a great experience I’m sure we’ll continue to look back on."
