Free Period Underwear
Our school will shortly be participating in an 8-week trial during which the Department of Education (the department) provides free period underwear to students.
The trial is designed to help the department understand the benefits of providing free period underwear to students, and aims to:
- relieve students of the stigma, anxiety and discomfort that can be associated with menstruation and its management.
- ease the cost of living for families.
Using period underwear provided at the school is optional. Students can choose whether they would like to order the period underwear. Period underwear will be available in a range of sizes.
Menstruating students will be given the opportunity to get up to 5 period underwear for free.
What is period underwear?
Period underwear are reusable underwear that absorb period blood, replacing the need for a tampon or pad for many people.
The period underwear being supplied to students can hold up to 2-3 tampons worth of period blood and are designed for moderate-heavy flow.
Period underwear can be washed and reused. For more information about how to use and wash period underwear, see: How To Wash Period Undies – Your Complete Guide.
How can my child get free period underwear through the trial?
To get free period underwear, students or families must order online. Students will be given a flyer that provides a link and a code to enter at checkout which will allow them to get up to 5 free period underwear and free shipping. Students or families can provide a convenient address within Victoria for shipping when they make the online order. Students can also be supported to order while at school if required. Free period underwear can be ordered until Friday 11 October.

Raising Body Kind Teens
It's not always easy for young people to feel good in their body. But this September we are asking them to be Body Kind; to their own body and to others, online and face to face. Body Kind Schools is an annual awareness activity of the Butterfly Foundation and we are proud to be on board supporting our students body image.
Are you looking for some practical advice on how to support your child’s body confidence?
It can be hard to know how to respond when a child speaks negatively about themselves, particularly when so many adults struggle with their own body image.
Surf Coast Secondary College and Surf Coast Youth (Surf Coast Shire) are proud to present an opportunity for parents to join the experts from the Butterfly Foundation for a free, relaxed and informative 75mins seminar for parents/carers on practical strategies for supporting positive body image in teens.
Date: Monday 9th September
Time: 7pm-8:30pm
Zoom Link: https://butterfly-org-au.zoom.us/j/85763256386 Meeting ID 857 6325 6386
Butterfly Foundation ask that microphones are kept on mute and participants use the chat function if they have a question.
By way of a reminder this session is designed for an adult audience and we kindly ask that children do not participate.
Butterfly specialist counsellors are available 8am – Midnight (AEST), 7 days a week should you have any concerns about eating disorders or body image issues, whether for yourself or someone you care about.
For further information and free resources, families with teenagers can access Butterfly’s Body Kind Families (registration required). For families with younger children, information is available as part of Butterfly’s Body Bright Primary Program
Bully No Way: National Week of Action
Surf Coast Secondary College participated in Bullying No Way: National week of Action 12th-16th August 2024.
Bullying No Way Week is a commitment being made by thousands of schools and supporters across the country. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to bullying prevention. It gives us an opportunity to connect with students, staff and school communities to implement workable solutions to prevent bullying.
The theme for this year's campaign is Everyone belongs. This theme highlights the importance of creating a sense of belonging and inclusion for students. We recognise bullying often thrives in environments where individuals feel marginalised or excluded, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every student feels valued and respected.
By working collaboratively within our community, we can collectively help reduce bullying.
As part of our participation in this week, the library ran a bead bracelet activity with the words 'be kind' and 'stand up' on them to recognise the need for both prevention, in being kind, and reaction, in standing up for each other and ourselves.
If your child tells you about things at school, or you observe something in public that involves conflict or bullying, take the opportunity to talk about what bullying is. You can learn more about what defines bullying at bullyingnoway.gov.au.
Remind your child that bullying is never okay and discuss how they can respond safely if they experience or witness it. Encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult and keep seeking support if needed.
By promoting open communication, we empower children to stand up against bullying and create a safer environment where everyone can feel that they belong.
Wear it Purple Day
On Friday 30th August we celebrated ‘Wear It Purple Day’. This day unites LGBTQIA+ youth and allies to shine a glorious light on the thousands of schools, community organisations, universities, and workplaces that are coming together to create a more inclusive future for all Australians.
Wear It Purple Day was founded by students in response to global stories of teenagers taking their own lives due to bullying and harassment. Since then, Wear it Purple Day has become an international movement of love and support.
Our students and staff were welcomed to wear a splash of purple. By wearing purple, Australians demonstrate to rainbow young people that they are celebrated and respected, acknowledging all have the right to be proud of who they are and who they are becoming.
Here at SCSC we proudly flew the progress pride flag and ran a pronoun badge making activity in the library along with various other activities. Thanks to the wonderful team at Surf Coast Youth, we also had a pledge for staff and students to sign, to show our support for our LGBTIQA+ community.
National Asthma Week
1st - 7th September 2024 is National Asthma Week. Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in Australia, affecting around 2.8 million people in Australia, with children being the most impacted. Asthma is responsible for at least one Australian death every day and around 100 hospitalisations every day, with over 80% of these hospitalisations considered potentially avoidable.
2020-2021 it was estimated that $851.7 million was spend on management and treatment of asthma.
Asthma Australia is running the 'Huff & Puff' active fundraiser to help keep support programs and services available to the asthma community at no cost, including: supporting research, 1800 ASTHMA information line and the AirSmart app.
The Huff & Puff encourages Australians everywhere to choose their distance and either run, ride or swim for 10 days to raise money and to get breathless for asthma. There is also an option to donate directly here. The Asthma Huff & Puff is Australia's only dedicated event supporting people with asthma.
