What have we been learning about in Physical Education this term?
Foundation, Years 1 + 2:
Students in the junior school have completed a unit on athletics skills including running, jumping and throwing. We used modified equipment to practice the movements of shot put and discus and developed different techniques to jump for height and distance. Students in Year 1 and 2 progressed to using the scissor kick action while attempting to clear increasingly greater heights on the high jump mat. This week we have begun our unit on Target Games which will continue for the remainder of the term.
Year 3 + 4:
Students in the middle years have completed a unit on Athletics skills. Initially using modified equipment to practice skills such as shot put and discus, they quickly moved on to using the real equipment, creating some solid divots in the oval as they hurled the 2kg shot puts. Students were very comfortable in their long jump techniques but were put well out of their comfort zone as many tried triple jump for the first time. This week we have begun our unit on Target Games which will continue for the remainder of the term.
Year 5 + 6:
The senior students have also completed their unit on athletics skills. Refining techniques that they were familiar with from previous years and athletics carnivals. Persistence tended to be the theme for a lot of the lessons as students aimed to perfect techniques such as the hop, skip, jump order of triple jump or the extension of the scissor kick in high jump to more of a 'flop' technique to reach greater heights. This week we have begun our unit on Target Games which will continue for the remainder of the term.
The Year 4 - 6 students headed down to Sandringham Athletics Track on Thursday the 15th of August to represent their house in the final major sporting event of the year. It was a beautiful sunny day and the enthusiasm from all the students was fantastic. It was great to see so many students volunteer to participate in some of the more challenging events such as the 1500m, 800m and hurdles to ensure they earned as many points for their house as possible. I was stationed at the finishing line of the 100m for most of the day and the thing that stood out to me was the great sportsmanship and encouragement the students showed towards each other, regardless of what house they were in.
Once all the events had been run and the points added up we had one of the closest finishes in recent memory. Congratulations to RED House, our 2024 House Athletics champions. They edged out Gold House in second, with Blue House in 3rd and Green House in 4th.
A massive thankyou to all the parent volunteers who helped out on the day. The event would not have run as smoothly as it did without your amazing help.
Last Tuesday the 20th of August a group of keen basketballers headed to MSAC to compete in the Hoop Time tournament. We had four teams entered on the day in different divisions and each team played around 5 - 7 shortened matches. The students had a fantastic day; they competed hard against some challenging opposition while also showing good sportsmanship throughout the day. Once all the pool matches had been completed, 3 teams qualified for the semi-finals. One of our Future Stars Mixed teams played in a thrilling semi final that went to 'golden point' and were unlucky to miss out on qualifying to play in the final. Our All Stars Girls and the other Future Stars Mixed teams did make it through to the grand finals and were both crowned winners on the day.
On Monday the 2nd of September we will be celebrating all things football with our annual footy colours day. Students are encouraged to wear their favourite footy team's colours from any of your favourite footy codes: AFL, rugby or soccer.
Following our assembly the students will participate in a parade celebrating each team and footy code. After recess we will be running the footy coin line to determine which is the most popular team at BRPS in 2024. We encourage students to bring as many coins as they would like to place in their favourite team's line. Proceeds will go to funding projects initiated by the SRC group, such as the oval clock.
Susanne and Debbie are continuing the highly successful Run Club throughout this term so please encourage your child/children to come along on a Wednesday at 8am and enjoy the fitness and fun.
A reminder that whilst the running club is predominantly aimed at the students in Years 4 - 6, younger students are welcome to attend. We are asking however that if your child in Foundation - Year 3 is going to attend that a parent also stays to supervise them in case the activity becomes a bit too much for them.
