Upcoming Closure to Pedestrian Underpass - Hall Street/Melbourne Road Newport
The school has been verbally advised by Viva Energy that the pedestrian underpass from Hall Street to Melbourne Road, near Kohry Reserve will be closed for approximately 6 weeks. Works will commence sometime in the next 2 weeks.
Dates will be confirmed, and the school will forward this information onto NLPS families.
If you use this underpass, please be prepared to adjust your route to school during that time.
Working Bee - Saturday 8th November
The School Council invites you to the 2025 NLPS Working Bee on Saturday 8th November from 10am–2pm.
Our goal is to make sure the school looks its best ahead of the School Fete on 14th November. It’s a great way to get outdoors, lend a hand, and connect with other families while helping to keep our school grounds in tip-top shape. Previous Working Bees have made a real impact on our outdoor spaces — benefitting our children, families, and the whole school community.
It’s a family event, and children are welcome to join in — they’ve been a huge help in previous years.
Although we’ll share more details closer to the day, jobs will include:
- Gardening, pruning, planting, and mulching garden beds
 - General tidying and sweeping outdoor areas and paths
 - Minor maintenance
 - Painting and other small projects to enhance the school

The work is accessible to everyone — whether you’re a weekend gardener, skilled trade, or just keen to pitch in. You don’t need to stay the whole time; even an hour or two of your time makes a real difference.
Whilst it’s not essential, feel free to bring your own tools including work gloves, power tools, gardening tools, and personal protection – note the School has a range of tools we can use on the day.
How to get involved:
Please register - HEREso we can plan tasks, contact you with further information, and track attendance on the day.
Hope to see you there!
Warm regards,
Ben Houkamau and Dean Marshall

I Am Malala - Book Drive
Currently, our Year 5/6 students are reading the Young Readers edition of 'I Am Malala'.
As part of this learning experience, families at Newport Lakes Primary School have the opportunity to support the Malala Fund - an organisation dedicated to ensuring every girl has the chance to learn and shape her own future.
To contribute to this inspiring cause, we are offering all families of all year levels the opportunity to purchase copies of the adult edition of 'I Am Malala' from the school at a very low price of $5.00 per book. All money raised from book sales will be donated directly to the Malala Fund.
Order your books via CompassTix - HERE
Donations/orders will close on Friday 31st October 2025, unless supply is exhausted beforehand.
Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani female education activist, and producer of film and television. She is the youngest Nobel Prize laureate in history, receiving the prize in 2014 at age 17, and is the second Pakistani and the only Pashtun to receive a Nobel Prize. Her book 'I am Malala' is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.
