Year 6 News

From Ben F, Year 6 teacher
Skiing down Bourke St
At the end of last term year 6 packed their ski gear and jumped on the buses for ski camp at Mount Buller. For 2 and half days we hit the slopes and had a fantastic time. Here are some reflections from their time hitting the slopes and taking in the fresh mountain air.
Group 1 Ski Camp Reflection -
The second we saw snow the bus erupted. We all immediately wanted to hit the slopes and glide down the powdery mountain! We all got off the bus and collected our luggage, on our way to the chalet. The chalet was big with a lot of levels. On level one they had the main entrance and restaurant. On level 2 they had some guest rooms. On level three the girls had their rooms, and on level four the boys had their rooms. There was also a common room where we had group briefings. After dropping off our luggage, we didn’t waste another second! We hired our skis and ski boots and got into our lessons! Most of us started off at the magic carpet, a moving platform that takes you to the top of a small easy slope. We practiced a few times, and then some groups advanced to chairlifts! The chairlifts were kind and slow, and it was nice to talk to your friends whilst high in the sky!
After lessons with teachers, we got to do FREE SKI! This was where you could ski with your friends unsupervised! We had a lot of fun, spending hours just taking the chairlift up and skiing down, over and over again. It didn’t get boring! At the end of every big day we would eat dinner at the restaurant located at our chalet. The first night's meal was burgers and fries, but in my opinion they weren’t that nice! On day two my room woke up at about 6:15am, getting ready for the day. The lessons and free ski were about the same, but this time we had lunch at a restaurant along the ABOM express, called Abomination. We were given the option of fries, moist rice with warm curry or vegetables and a lot more sides. We all enjoyed the meal quite a lot! Afterwards we enjoyed our free ski once more. Some of us chose to go tobogganing at a nearby tobogganing racecourse! I love tobogganing and I’m sure a lot more people love it too!
In the common room people played Foosball and ping pong, even though all the ping pong balls were broken. Everyone seemed to be having a great time, so we were all really sad that the next day we’d have to leave! The next day we didn’t get any time for free ski, instead we had our lessons and then we had to return our ski and boots. After getting our luggage it was off time. All in all this camp to the snow was my favourite and I’m sure others agree. It was a great time to bond with all my friends before we move on to Highschool! - Melanie 6F
Group 2 Ski Camp Reflection -
As we entered the cabin the warmth wrapped us in a blanket and rocked us around. The breeze was calm and gentle as we sighed in relief but it wasn’t always like that. Let's rewind a bit …
As we walked down the hall in a rush to get changed every nook and cranny was filled with bags and people struggling to get their ski clothes/equipment on. As sweat ran down our faces we finally succeeded to put our gear on. Our whole body felt scorching hot, tight but relieved at the same time. After the majority of people were changed we headed down stairs we were startled by huge chunks of snow. As people slid down the mountain of snow whilst trying to get up, others were having merciless snowball fights though some were just eating their lunch as tranquil as possible.
After our short lunch break, our formal teachers told us to line up. And though some strained to compose themselves we eventually managed to form 3 straight lines. Then we made our way towards a small building where people who ordered their ski gear could line up and collect them. For the rest of us we collected sheets of paper that explained our weight and our height so that the people working there could give us our skis and ski boots. Now it was time for the finale, the unbeatable boss. As people groaned in agony as each step felt as if they were digging into their shins, many suffered as a long flight of stairs stood before us.
After we made it to the top of the mountain we were assigned our ski groups. After all the “fun stuff” we bunched up into our groups and started to learn the basics of skiing that would still turn to going down a massive mountain. We went down what was called the magic carpet where our instructors taught us to go down the slope with a pizza which dug through the ground and allowed us to slow down.
After a long day of skiing and aching shins, we finally made it to our resort ! Where we were assigned the groups which we would stay in the same cabin in for 2. After that was sorted we were brought down for our personal favourite, dinner!!! We had an immense portion of both fries, a burger and ketchup! Everyone gobbled up the food quickly and we were given delicious coconut, vanilla ice cream and headed back to our cozy cabins to rest for a full day of skiing but before we we went to go do a trivia it was chaotic but wholesome at the same time and it’s a moment we will never forget.
Before we knew it it was day two and not just any day but our first ( and only ) full day of skiing!Chloe was super tired because she awoke at 5.00am. While Lillian was sound asleep but anyways we all headed towards the ski rentals to borrow our ski’s from the day before and we headed up the mountain again, everyone was used to the pain by now, and once we got into our groups again we headed off. After a few minutes of ski demonstrations, we skied down the mountain and went up a ski lift. It was frightful at first but in the end most people got the hang of it. Then we headed to lunch, where we had a huge variety of meals and juices! Then we went for free skiing for 3 hours! Me, Lillian, my mum and Temwa went skiing down the mountain from both the middle and the tippy top! It was super foggy but it was worth it! After a wholesome dinner we watched Ice age while celebrating Harrison’s birthday, and went downstairs to shower and sleep. I played card games with my friends whilst others watched bluey on their tv.
wooh ! We made it to day three, the final day. It was a long journey here and we will leave with memories it was truly an amazing trip and beats every camp we’ve had so far and many would agree to everyone is so glad we made it but now it’s time for us leave many people are planning to return really such an amazing experience. -
