Year 5 News

From Matilda B, Year 5 teacher

Writing

Starting off in Writing Term 4 we have been exploring different genres of writing such as narrative and informative. Year five has also begun planning and drafting a persuasive piece to the Australian government, convincing them to invest in our natural disaster solution products we designed in Geography last term. We also have been learning how to hook in our audience with sizzling starts, compelling headlines and high modality words. This term we have also focused on how to make sure the problem that our designs solve is directly addressed and identified clearly.

We've had an excellent start towards term 4 in maths. We've been exploring 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication and division. We learnt the Grid Method and the Area Method. We also have been revising on the Split Strategy. The most recent strategy we've been encountering is the Chunking Method. We dived into how the process of division is done to further strengthen our prior knowledge. We've also unpacked loads of factors and multiples. That's all we've learnt so far and we look forward to learning lots throughout the term! - Vincent and Mahdi

Geography and wellbeing

So far this term, we have been learning about natural disasters and how to prevent them. As well as that we have been role models to the younger years, learning and showing the zones of regulation. For geography we have been designing important solutions needed for the disasters.— Eamon

Specifically, in geography, we’ve been designing solutions for selected disasters such as droughts, floods and tsunamis as a project for kids and space. While in well-being, we’ve been learning about the zones of regulation. Showing the younger cohorts strategies to prevent bad emotions such as anger and sadness.— Miranda

Reading

So far in term 4 we have been doing… predictions, connections. First we’ll tell you about connections. We have been learning about deep connections, tier 3 words and more, like text to self, text to world, text to text. Now, let’s get into predictions. We’ve been reading different books and predicting different things like plot, characters, setting, and more. We have predicted outcomes before reading, during reading, and after reading. - Suli & Frankie
