Year 1 News

From Joey & Bill, Year 1 teachers

Welcome Back — It’s Term 4!

What a wonderful start to Term 4 for our Year 1 students! In Literacy, the students explored cultures and celebrations from around the world, learning how different people mark special occasions. They enjoyed reading stories, watching short videos, and discussing similarities and differences between celebrations.

As a cohort we also began our first History unit for the term, My History. Students are learning about the concepts of past and present, how people change as they grow, and how families can be different but special in their own ways. Later this term, they will move on to their second unit, Mesopotamia, where they’ll explore one of the world’s earliest civilisations. To finish off a busy and exciting week, all Year 1 students spent time with their Year 5 buddies, working together on ordering large numbers. It was a great opportunity for collaboration, teamwork, and building strong connections across year levels.

Looking Ahead

This term promises to be an exciting one, filled with meaningful learning experiences, co-curricular activities, and excursions to look forward to. This term in Reading, students will continue developing their comprehension skills by reading a range of decodable and authentic texts with their peers and teachers. Together, we will explore texts from different cultures and experiences, discuss how texts are organised according to their purpose, and compare how images and sound contribute to meaning across various text types.

Writing will be closely integrated with reading this term. After exploring different cultures and celebrations around the world, students will investigate how repetition, rhyme, and rhythm create cohesion in simple poems, limericks, and haikus. These new skills will support students to add creative ideas and rich details to their future writing.

 Maths

We revised place value through lots of hands-on games, puzzles, and group activities that helped strengthen their understanding of tens and ones.

Later this term in Maths, students will also explore:

  • Patterns and Sequences
  • Skip Counting
  • The Four Operations
  • Multiplicative Thinking
  • Shapes
  • Measurement (Length, Capacity, and Mass)
  • Number Fluency
