Learning in Action

Literacy

Through our Literature lessons, whilst reading Waves, we’ve been introduced to several characters who have migrated to Australia. Some of the people we have met so far are:

Anak - who sailed from Indonesia to New Guinea over ten thousand years ago, finally arriving in Northern Australia.

Marteen - who sailed from The Netherlands in the early 1700s, hoping to reach Indonesia but was shipwrecked on the Western Australian coast.

Jalak - who sailed from Timor to Australia for trade purposes in the mid 1700s.

Henry - a young boy who worked on ships that sailed to Australia in late 1780s. The money he earned was sent back to England to help his family.

Finola - a child convict sent to Australia as her punishment.

Martha - whose family were offered a land package to settle in Australia in the late 1840s.

The diversity of backgrounds and stories have ensured that robust conversations have occurred in each classroom whilst learning about immigrants who have shaped Australia’s culture today.

Students have also started planning narratives that are written in the first person. They have focused on the literary devices of similes, adjectives and repetition to enrich their writing. Additionally, they’ve been practising identifying the dependent and independent clause in each sentence and choosing an appropriate conjunction.

During Word Work we have investigated the Greek etymology of numbers that are found in words, eg:

1. Mono - monorail

2. Di - diverge

3. Tri - tricycle

Preview for Learning:

We will continue reading Waves and students will continue with planning their narratives.

Maths

In our recent lessons, students have begun their unit on multiplication. Students have looked at strategies to solve times tables and then using this answer to solve larger multiplication problems. We have investigated what happens when we multiply a number by 10, 100 and 1000. Students have practised partitioning numbers using the split strategy to solve problems. Eg: 34 x 8 = 30 x 8 + 4 x 8.

We have continued looking at data and how we can present information on a dot plot. We discussed the importance of the graph title, axis titles and keys to ensure our information can be interpreted correctly.

Preview for Learning:

We will continue to partition numbers to solve multiplication problems, however we will use the area/box model and traditional algorithms to do this.

Green Team News:

Under the guidance of Mrs Stokol and Mrs Alexander, the Green Team met for the first time this week. What a meeting it was! All up across years 3-5 we have close to 50 very excited and passionate students wanting to do their part. Whether it’s helping to keep the school free of rubbish, looking after and developing the plants gardens, educating the school community about sustainability, there was a buzz in the air as students shared their ideas and signed up for roles. A new initiative we’ve introduced this term is the collection of 10c containers. The special lunch day during last term raised $21. We look forward to saving these containers on a daily basis from going to landfill and turning them into cash. Money raised will be invested back into Green Team initiatives.

Involvement in the Green Team is all inclusive. It’s not too late for your child to get involved should they wish.
