Learning in Action
Literacy
This fortnight, the chapter students read in All Around Australia, was based in Western Australia. They found Cottesloe Beach particularly entertaining with all the creative sculptures. They have enjoyed exploring Australian landmarks and deepening their comprehension by analysing the illustrations as well as the text. The Grade 3s have also planned and written their introduction and started the body paragraph for the explanation text on waterfalls, using topic specific vocabulary. The grammar focus has been on using conjunctions (but , so, because) to join sentences. Our vocabulary was adventure, agreed, humongous, steep and the challenge words were ‘preposterous and elusive’.

Students will continue analysing the picture story book All Around Australia and completing the explanation report about waterfalls. The sentence level grammar will be on sentence types (question, statement, command, exclamation) and the Word Work focus will conclude the unit on homophones.
Maths
This fortnight, students have been developing their understanding of addition. They revised different vocabulary that relates to addition and built on their fluency by using strategies they have previously learnt to solve 2 and 3 digit addition problems. Students have also practised reordering equations and breaking numbers up (e.g. into place values) to help them solve addition problems more efficiently. Students began working towards their individual goals by learning specific strategies to help them solve addition problems.
Students have furthered their understanding of location by beginning their rich task which will involve them creating a map of a school playground. The task began with students viewing the playground from different angles outside, and considering what symbols could be used to create their legend.

Grade 3 students will continue to learn about addition, focusing on the ‘=’ sign meaning ‘the same as’, they will then begin to explore the connection between addition and subtraction. Students will continue their location rich task, by completing their map and then creating their own set of questions about their map for a partner to answer.
Wellbeing
This fortnight, students have been exploring more about what emotions look like and developing their vocabulary to identify and describe their emotions. They have worked on identifying the positive and negative emotions that could be experienced in response to various events and circumstances.
Students have also continued to explore tips and strategies to help them navigate Friendship Fires and when people are mean on purpose, moving through the Friend-o-cycle like a ninja. They have discussed the importance of honesty in relationships, and how when it comes to honesty, it’s important to be "Kind-on-Purpose".

Students will continue to name a range of positive and negative emotions that students can experience during their time in class or in the playground. They will also explore the influence that people, situations and events can have on their own and others’ emotions.
If you have any questions or would like to arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via Compass at any point during the year.

Green Team News:
Under the guidance of Mrs Stokol and Mrs Alexander, the Green Team met for the first time this week. What a meeting it was! All up across years 3-5 we have close to 50 very excited and passionate students wanting to do their part. Whether it’s helping to keep the school free of rubbish, looking after and developing the plants gardens, educating the school community about sustainability, there was a buzz in the air as students shared their ideas and signed up for roles. A new initiative we’ve introduced this term is the collection of 10c containers. The special lunch day during last term raised $21. We look forward to saving these containers on a daily basis from going to landfill and turning them into cash. Money raised will be invested back into Green Team initiatives.
Involvement in the Green Team is all inclusive. It’s not too late for your child to get involved should they wish.
