Japan’s Children’s Day
In Japan, May 4 is a National Holiday to celebrate the health and happiness of children. Some of the symbols of this day are carp (koi) streamers and samurai helmets (kabuto). Both these cultural items represent strength, perseverance and resilience.
Within the College, all students and families were invited to make an origami carp (koi) for the display in the playground. Together they were colourful and gave joy to all who saw them. Thank you to those who contributed.
On Saturday 3 May in Hobart, students were invited to Youth Arts and Recreation Centre to participate and try cultural activities from Japan. Activities included the martial art of kendo, kumunda (Jungle Gym), writing your name in katakana and making traditional Japanese sweets. Representatives from Mount Carmel College shared different origami designs with people of all ages. Thank you to the volunteers and for the students who came along to share in the fun.
Languages Week 2025
Next week we celebrate Languages Week at Mount Carmel. It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and learn more about the diversity of languages and culture that exist within our school community and in our classrooms.
From having a cup of green tea (ocha) to start your day to participating in Japanese sports day (undoukai) activities to making an origami samurai helmet or mini yai chan, there is something for all students to enjoy.
