Middle School Director Update

Thursday 8 May 2025

Dear Families, Students and Community Members,

Middle School Update – A Semester of Growth and Opportunity

This year marks an exciting milestone for the College with the establishment of our Middle School, encompassing both Year 9 and Year 10. Terms One and Two have been filled with dynamic and enriching learning experiences, both in and beyond the classroom. Our students have embraced the transition into the new sub-school structure with enthusiasm and resilience, and we’ve seen a growing sense of momentum and achievement as they adapt to the increased responsibilities of their senior years.

As expected, key concepts like attendance, coursework, benchmarks, and deadlines have become part of the Middle School students’ daily vocabulary—sometimes met with a sense of urgency! However, these are all vital components of their academic journey, and our students are rising to the challenge.

While much of the semester has focused on academic development and career preparation, there has also been plenty of time for fun, connection, and co-curricular engagement. Middle School students have taken part in a wide variety of activities, including sports carnivals, interschool sport days, volunteering at Open Night, and more.

One standout highlight has been the inspiring leadership shown by our Year 9 SEP students, who have taken on coaching and mentoring roles with local primary school students. This initiative reflects the strong sense of community and leadership we aim to foster at the College, and we are incredibly proud of their dedication and positive impact.

Career and Course Planning for 2026

A central focus of the Middle School is supporting students in their transition toward future pathways and destinations. The middle years can be a time of uncertainty, especially as students begin making decisions that shape their personal and academic futures. This has certainly been evident throughout the semester. Thankfully, our students have access to a strong network of support through experienced career practitioners, dedicated mentors, and Year Level Coordinators, who are all committed to guiding them through this period of growth.

The subject selection process for 2026 is set to commence in the coming weeks. Students will begin choosing subjects that align with their individual interests, strengths, and aspirations. This is a crucial step in shaping their educational journey. To support this process, students and families will receive important information via assemblies, emails, and information sessions. We strongly encourage students to actively participate in these opportunities and for families to engage in these conversations at home, helping their child make informed and thoughtful decisions.

Year 10 Work Experience and Careers

Currently, our Year 10 students are participating in their work experience placements. These opportunities provide invaluable insight into the world beyond school and allow students to explore potential career options in real-life settings. We hope this week has been both rewarding and inspiring, and we look forward to hearing about their experiences upon their return.

Once back at school, our Year 10 students will begin preparing for their upcoming exams. These assessments are designed to mirror the structure and expectations of the VCAA VCE examinations, providing students with a supportive introduction to formal exam processes. For many, this will be their first experience with structured assessments of this kind, and it's completely natural to feel nervous. Our mentors and MFMP teachers will be working closely with students, sharing effective study techniques and stress management strategies. We also ask that families support their child in finding the approaches that work best for them.

As always, we sincerely thank our families for their ongoing support and partnership. We look forward to finishing the semester on a high note and continuing our shared journey of student growth, learning, and success.
