Room 1 Years 3 -6

Woohooo! We are back! I am so happy to be returning to school and being back with the team. I really missed the students in Room 1 over the break, in fact, this is what I missed about each of them:

  • April's helping hand
  • Ethan's cheeky smile
  • Fezz's jokes
  • Ariella's sense of humour
  • Atti's wittiness
  • Emma's sense of care
  • Tom's ability to think outside the box
  • Brylie's laugh
  • Angus' stories
  • Hunter's determination

We have had a fantastic start to the Term. On Monday, I took Atti and April to the GRIP Leadership conference. The GRIP Student Leadership Conference is all about giving students real, practical tools to help them be better school leaders. It’s not full of boring lectures—everything is fast-paced, fun, and focused on things students can actually start doing straight away. I am super proud of the way Atti and April represented Cowwarr amongst 20 other schools, it can be really intimidating to be in a HUGE crowd with new faces but they both showed confidence and kindness throughout the whole day. Atti was in his element on the stage- we may have a performer in the making here...

On Wednesday, we had a power outage. There was no power between 10:15am until about 1:30pm so we had to put into action our school value; RESILENCE. During school values, we have discussed that resilience can be shown before, during and after learning. Here are some of our ideas:

Resilience

Before

  • Making sure my mindset is right
  • Let the little things go
  • Thinking positive thoughts before learning even if it is something I don’t want to do.
  • Use positive coping strategies to minimise negative thoughts.

During

  • Understanding mistakes help me learn.
  • Not giving up easily and having a go.
  • Don’t get upset when it is time to swap activities during class time.
  • Remind myself that hard moments will pass.
  • If you get upset, try go for a break.

After

  • Take a few deep breaths.
  • Talk to someone after a difficult moment to help you feel better.
  • Say, ‘If you didn’t get it right the first time, you might next time.’
  • Think about what you could do differently next time to get a different result.

When things don't go the way we want them to, it's okay to feel an uncomfortable emotion but we don't want to stay in that place. We need to try positive coping strategies to help us become more resilient.

In Room 1, we all have our own list of strategies that help us when we feel angry, upset, frustrated, disappointed etc. We can use these at any point during the day to ensure we can return to our learning feeling better, and ready to engage again.

On Friday, our students spent part of the day baking slices and other sweet treats to share with the community on Saturday, as our school will be serving as a voting location. We’ve heard there might even be a sausage sizzle happening—so come along, say hello, and enjoy some delicious goodies while you vote!
