Years 2 & 3

It's been a busy couple of weeks in year 2-3. Students have settled into the term well and have been getting into some really good work.

In our literacy sessions, a focus during fluency reading has been on self-evaluating our fluency reading. Students have been evaluating their reading in terms of expression, phrasing, accuracy, and speed. Everyone has made a real effort to consider this carefully and be honest with themselves. We emphasise the self-evaluating is not about 'rating' or 'judging' oneself as good or bad but about noticing parts of reading we are doing well and part of reading we can still improve on.

The other highlight of our literacy sessions continues to be our FABULOUS class novel The tale of Despereaux. The plot and language of this book continue to delight and entertain us. An element of complexity in this book is the timeline of events, with the events of the plot narrated out of order. We have begun analysing this and it is providing a good level of challenge for the class.

We have also been getting in to some meaty stuff in Maths, working on addition and subtraction strategies. Using partitioning skills, students have been practicing using two different strategies to solve double digit addition problems. Students have made consistent and dedicated effort to work at these problems with different strategies and methods in tune with their own learning needs, both challenging themselves with extension or taking it back to a simpler level when helpful. I'm really proud of the work they have done and the effort and maturity they have shown as maths learners so far this term.

In Wellbeing we have begun thinking about our personal strengths. We will continue to explore personal strengths and ways we can use knowledge of our personal strengths to help us through difficult times.
