We are excited to announce a unique opportunity for our school community to embark on a cultural journey by becoming host families for international students. Opening your spare room allows you and your family to immerse yourselves in a new culture, create lifelong friendships, and foster a global perspective.
From Japan: 12 February 2024 – 26 February 2024 (14 Nights) - $617 per student
Requirements
I'm working 3 days a week, can the international students go to school by bus sometime?
Outside of school, international students are expected to be with their family members at all times. If your child is a student at TGSHS, then the international students can come to school with your child.
I have a family member over the age of 18, do they need a Blue Card?
Yes, they do. The application is free and can be done online. TGSHS can assist with this application.
My child attends TGSH. Do international students require me to drive them to and from school?
If your child is able to go to school together with the international students, there is no need for you to provide transportation. They can either walk or take the bus to school independently, without your assistance.
If you want to become a host family or want more information, please get in touch with Emi at esuzu0@eq.edu.au or (07) 3511 3877 / 0499 765 434.

We need more host families for the students on this study tour. If you know anyone who can do this, please share this information with them. We would appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Isabelle's Unforgettable Journey in China
From 16 to 31 October, our Year 10 student Isabelle Lord, represented the Gap SHS and Australia in the Chinese Bridge Global Competition, embarked on a thrilling adventure across China. Her journey took her to Beijing, Dali, and Kunming, offering a mix of iconic landmarks, culinary delights, competitions, and heart-warming interactions with contestants worldwide.
Isabelle's adventure began in China's capital, Beijing, where she delved into the nation's imperial history. Her first stop was the Great Wall of China. Isabelle hiked along and climbed all four watchtowers, taking in the breathtaking views that stretched as far as the eye could see. Next, she explored the historic Forbidden City, a palace complex where Chinese emperors lived. Through its courtyards and magnificent halls, Isabelle was transported back to China's imperial era. Delicious food is definitely a significant part of her visit. Isabelle tried Peking Duck and traditional hot pot in Beijing, immersing herself in the rich flavours of Chinese cuisine.
Isabelle's adventure continued in Dali in Yunnan province, where she participated in various competitions and cultural experiences. Throughout the Chinese knowledge test, speech competition, talent competition, and Chinese character recognition, Isabelle brought out the best of herself and did an excellent job. Isabelle explored Dali's ancient town with its ancient architecture and vibrant marketplaces. The serene Erhai Lake provided a peaceful experience to her adventures, and she was able to be involved in ancient paper-making techniques. In one of the evenings, Isabelle had the opportunity to watch performances that showcased Yunnan's unique culture and traditions.
A high-speed bullet train carried Isabelle to Kunming, Yunnan's capital, where she had a unique opportunity to visit a local high school. Observing lessons and interacting with students gave her insights into the Chinese education system and allowed her to connect with young people from different cultures. A homestay with a local family offered Isabelle a warm and personal experience. Later, Isabelle explored the city's largest flower market, an explosion of colours and fragrances. A visit to a wild animal zoo brought her closer to the region's diverse wildlife, and she had the opportunity to see big pandas.
As her trip came to its end, Isabelle had time to explore the city's bustling markets, filled with local handicrafts, textiles, and souvenirs. She also dedicated time to rehearsals and refined her skills for upcoming performances.
Isabelle achieved 6th in Oceania and received a merit prize. She has the opportunity to take a scholarship in China after graduation. She returned home with cherished memories and new friendships. It is a journey filled with discovery and cultural exchange. Congratulations, Isabelle and welcome back home!
