Rugby Gala Day

Last Friday a group of Grade 5 and 6’s participated in a Rugby Gala Day. A beautiful day weather-wise was a great start to the day before stepping onto the bus.

We headed to Kooyong Park where people from the NRL were there to help us learn the game but also how to tackle, set up, play the ball, and specific positions such as dummy half and first receiver. There was music all day, dance competitions and running relay races in between some of the games.

We took a Boys Tackle and Tag and Girls Tag Team.

Boys Tackle Report

Last Friday during our time at the Rugby Gala day we were very busy. When we first arrived we placed our bags down and got introduced to a man who helped us practice to know how to play the game properly. After that, everyone got straight into their matches. Our coach was Mr Pensini and in the tackle team, we had some boys from Year 5 and Year 6. The first game was against Saint Joan of Arc. We played very well but they just got over the top of us. That was 1 of the 3 matches we played.

After our snack break, we got into the 2nd game against St Mary’s. Harry M got our first try but sadly we still lost. After the game, we all participated in a dance party with all the other schools. Finally, we had our 3rd game but it didn’t end well. We got smashed but it didn’t matter because, at the end of the day, we all had fun.

We would like to thank Mr Greene for making this all possible for us because I know everyone enjoyed it.

We arrived at Kooyong Park around 9:15. We started by meeting the professional coaches, who gave all of us a 1-hour training session to teach us the basics of rugby. Then we got ready for our matches. Keep in mind, a  try is worth 4 points.

In game 1 our tag team played St Josephs. We started off nervous but Henry scored a try which settled our nerves, with us winning 4-0, a great start to the day.

After winning in game 1 we came excited and ready. We beat St Joan of Arc 8-0.  Lachie and Morgan scored our tries this game, and we once again kept the opposition scoreless.

Continuing on our winning streak, we were very confident coming up against St Patrick's Primary. After Henry delivered a try, they struck back evening the score. But Noah and Lachie combined for another two tries, and so we won the game 12-4.

In game 4 we played the St Patrick's second team, we beat them 4-0 with Andy scoring the only try and we all did the selfie celebration. It was our last game and we finished undefeated not losing a single game.

After finishing our gala day we went onto the bus pumped after winning every game and told all the buddies about the win.

Girls Tag Report -

Game 1 was against St Josephs and we were all really excited for our first experience. A wonderful gesture by Sammy R who played for St. Joseph's because they were short a player. Annabelle and Marni were able to score a try each which was great for the team.

In game 2 we played St. Joan of Arc. Another wonderful game played by the girls who were growing in confidence. Annabelle got herself multiple tries and Camilla was able to step into the scoring zone for a try too.

Game 3 was our first loss with St. Patricks having some serious speed on the outside.

Game 4 came down to the wire against St. Mary's Malvern East. They scored on the first play which we had not planned for. With consistent drives and runs with the ball we were able to get it near our scoring zone but never in it until Camilla received the ball, starting running to the middle drawing everyone. She then passed the ball off to Annabelle who ran to the corner and scored! We came away with a draw and the teamwork in that game was incredible.

Game 5 saw us lose to the other St. Patrick’s team. After they scored early we had multiple tries denied by Harriet, Annabelle, and Marni.

The group of students that participated in this day did a wonderful job, had lots of fun, and behaved incredibly well. Well done!
