Fixtures 14 October

From the Assistant Principal, Cocurricular

Welcome back to Term 4.  In my new position as Assistant Principal, Cocurricular, I will be overseeing all areas of the cocurricular program in the college.  This includes sport, cultural activities such as debating, and the performing arts.

The Performing Arts Department will maintain their own page in Woodchatta and the other cocurricular activities will continue to be posted under this Senior School Cocurricular Program page.

This weekend we have a round of friendly pre-season fixtures in basketball and ISA Cricket. Basketballers will be playing an internal round with cricket hosting St Stanislaus' Bathurst. Our competition season for basketball, cricket and tennis begins next weekend, 21 October.

Please ensure that your sons are correctly equipped for their respective sports and commit fully to their training and matches. To this end, the Uniform Shop will be open this Friday (13 October) from 8:00 am - 1:30 pm for any last minute uniform purchases.

Mr Matt Stearn - Assistant Principal, Cocurricular

Basketball

All senior teams will play this weekend in internal games at Oxford Falls, including our Gold League and Blue League teams, who will be assigned into squads at training this week. Please see the Fixture Spreadsheet at the top of the co-curricular section, which outlines game times and court allocation. Also a reminder that training has started and attendance is mandatory, please see the schedule below for your assigned time and location:

Basketball 2023/2024 Season Draw

A Home/Away Schedule for the ISA season has also been included, game times will be posted weekly. A finalised copy of team lists will be posted this week on Canvas.

The basketball coaches listing has been updated.  Please see the listing below.

Over the break, our First V and 17As competed in the Sydney Shootout, hosted by NBA School Australia. Our teams faced some of the best high school talent in the state and competed at a high level. We also had another successful round of clinics run by Grind Over Everything. These camps were a wonderful learning opportunity for our players and were enjoyed by all who attended.

From The Basketball Committee

Canteen Volunteers Needed

The Basketball Club is running the canteen at Oxford Falls on a trial basis for Term 4. If the roster can’t be filled each week, the school can take over running the canteen but that means the Basketball Club would need to find another fundraising source.

Basketball committee update

The basketball committee is currently considering the best way to support our boys on a sustainable basis. This is likely to be in the form of high quality coaching, camps or skills programs etc and the committee will work with Mr Garrett, the Basketball Convener, on a plan to support basketball over the longer term.

ISA Trial Round 4 - Saturday 14 October

ISA Cricket Holiday Trial Fixtures

Match 1: SPX 1st XI 135 (Luke Mooney 29, Flynn Mansbridge 22, Luke Austin 22) defeated by Waverley College 1st XI 7 for 136 (Jared Fernandes 3 for 19, Lucas Gleeson 3 for 23).

Match 2: SPX 1st XI 7-278 (Olver Freeman 98, Lachlan Jursevic 76, Luke Mooney 23, Rohan Chang 22) defeated Shore 2nd XI 119 (Jared Fernandes 3 for 9, Lucas Gleeson 2 for 24, Andrew May 2 for 17).

Two trial matches for the upcoming ISA cricket season were held in the holiday break at Queens Park against fellow EREA school Waverley. SPX was sent in and at 3 for 86 were quite well placed after solid innings from Luke Mooney and Luke Austin. The batting fell away as wickets were sacrificed except for a rear-guard innings from Flynn Mansbridge. A strong fightback with the ball had the match evenly poised with the opposition at 5 for 70 after an excellent three wicket spell from Lucas Gleeson. However, some sensible batting ensured the target was reached although Jared Fernandes impressed with his pace.

The following day at the Shore playing fields at Northbridge a very good batting pitch was taken advantage of by the SPX players. Luke Mooney again made a good start but the loss of two wickets left the team at 4 for 81. A very good stand of 64 between Oliver Freeman and Rohan Chang steadied the situation before an aggressive partnership between Freeman and Lachlan Jursevic. The pair put on 110 runs in just 14 overs before Freeman was bowled just two runs short of a century in an outstanding innings. Jursevic played shots all around the ground to register his equal top score. Despite some fast penetrative bowling from Andrew May with the new ball and Jared Fernades and Lucas Gleeson before drinks, there was some inconsistent efforts in the field that need to be improved upon. Flynn Mansbridge took two catches, while wicket keeper Freeman completed a day to remember with three catches and a stumping.
