Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News

HOME INQUIRY:

Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.

Mathematics: Students are to work on the recall of any facts that they are not automatic in recalling.  You may like to create flash cards or skip count aloud with your child to help support their learning with this.

Remembering we are aiming to have learnt all our multiplication facts up to x12 by the end of the year. If your child can recall all of them, they can switch over to their division facts.

Inquiry: As we begin to look at advertising, it would be great if students focused on advertising in the community, at the shops, on and about products and in the media. Chatting about what works and what doesn’t work would be handy, along with discussing techniques that are used.

Year 6 Graduation:  We would like to share a photo gallery of the graduating class on graduation night. We need 2 photos of your child to show how they have grown up into the students we know today. Please include a baby photo and first day of school photo.  These photos can be emailed to Mrs Zadow (Zadow.jayne@goldengrove.sa.edu.au). With 2 weeks until the end of term, we are still sitting at 7 people who have sent photos. Congrats to them! Please have these in by the end of Term 3 as we need to get them into a variety of formats to celebrate our wonderful Year 6s.

Special Persons Afternoon- Friday the 19th of September

Invitations for SPA (Special Person’s afternoon) should have arrived home. If not please inquire at the office, there are spare copies there.

There is a parent form attached, this is to give permission for your child to leave early with their special person.

Unless these are returned, students will not be allowed to leave until the end of the day.

Current and Upcoming Learning

Reader’s Workshop:  Students will be using Reader’s Workshop as an opportunity to read different texts that will inform their understanding of advertising techniques, we will also have time to enjoy free choice reading, to continue to foster their love of reading.

Writer’s Workshop: This week we will spend time refining our writing skills whilst looking at the writing techniques used in advertising.

Mathematics: Students will begin to explore volume and capacity through a range of exploratory activities.

Inquiry: Our classes will begin a new inquiry: Media influences the way we think and view the world which in the transdisciplinary theme of ‘How we Express Ourselves’

Exhibition: Exhibition is nearly over. We have some activities to reflect on the process that students have just been through. This will include a final journal – but in a video. Please make sure you check in with Toddle over the coming week to view these and also Exhibition assessments.

Health:

In Week 9 and 10, we will be hosting an incursion from The Chat Academy to support our growth and development classes. The year 5’s and 6’s will be taught separately, as they have different curriculums to cover. The sessions are age-appropriate and aim to help students develop a better understanding of their bodies. You may find that your child comes home with questions or thoughts to share following these lessons.

Got Odd Socks? 5/6FZ Needs Them! If you have any odd socks lying around at home, we’d love to take them off your hands! One of our students in 5/6FZ has a creative project in mind and is looking to repurpose them. Please consider donating any clean, mismatched socks to our classroom. Thank you for your support!
