Year 2 Storytelling

Article by Molly Young, Year 2 Leader

This term, our Year 2 writers have been on an exciting journey into storytelling. Their creativity has flourished as they experiment with new techniques to make their writing richer and more imaginative.

We began by looking at what makes a strong story. Students learned that every narrative needs a clear structure, with a beginning that grabs attention, a middle that develops the action, and an ending that ties it all together. They practised opening their pieces with bold and engaging introductions before moving on to creating characters and settings that readers could picture clearly.

As the term progressed, the focus shifted to building storylines. Students explored how to create problems that spark interest and solutions that complete their narratives with impact. They worked on making their plots more dynamic, learning how to add layers of detail and excitement.

Another key part of their learning has been editing. Rather than settling for a first draft, students have been revisiting their work, adding descriptive phrases and experimenting with word choices to make their writing more powerful. They discovered how adjectives and adverbs can transform simple sentences into ones that truly capture the reader’s imagination.

Throughout the remainder of the term, we’ll continue strengthening narrative skills by looking at how to sequence events smoothly and how to use dialogue to show the personalities and voices of their characters.

At the same time, students are making steady progress in handwriting. With practice in pencil grip, posture, and letter formation, they’re developing greater control and confidence in presenting their ideas clearly on the page.

At the end of the unit, our Year 2 students will have not only created imaginative stories but also gained valuable tools for expressing themselves in more complex and sophisticated ways.
