The Importance of School Attendance at Athol Road Primary School

At Athol Road Primary School, we know that regular attendance is one of the most important factors in helping children succeed at school. Being at school every day and on time allows students to fully participate in learning, develop friendships, and feel a strong sense of connection to their school community.

When children miss school, even for a few days across a term, it can impact their learning progress, confidence, and ability to keep up with their classmates. Just as importantly, school helps children build the routines, resilience, and social skills they will carry into later life.

Routines that Support Attendance

Families play a vital role in building habits that set children up for success. Strong home routines make mornings calmer and help children arrive at school ready to learn. Some helpful tips include:

  • Bedtime routines: Encourage a regular bedtime so your child gets enough rest.

  • Morning routines: Prepare bags, uniforms, and lunches the night before to make mornings smoother.

  • Limiting screen time: Switch off devices in the evening to support better sleep and a calmer start to the day.

When to Stay Home

There are times when it is appropriate for your child to stay home, such as when they are unwell with a fever, vomiting, or contagious illness. If your child is experiencing mild tiredness or simply “doesn’t feel like it,” it’s still important to encourage school attendance. These small moments build resilience and healthy patterns for life.

The Importance of Being on Time

Our school day begins at 9:00am, with music at 8:50am signalling that it’s time for students to come into class. Arriving on time ensures students don’t miss the Morning Circle, a routine we run each day that helps students feel safe, connected, and ready to learn. Arriving late means missing out on these important moments of connection and belonging.

Working Together

We understand that sometimes challenges at home or unexpected circumstances can affect your child’s attendance. We are here to support you and encourage you to contact the school if you need assistance. Together, we can help every child to develop positive attendance habits that will benefit them now and in the future.

Please contact the school on 9547 1224 if we can be of assistance with attendance. We value our home and school partnerships and we are here to support you and your child/ren.
