Mega Chapel – Jesus is my Superhero!

A highlight of Week 1 this term was our annual Mega Chapel! This special event saw our Senior School students paired with a buddy from Junior School. After escorting their buddies down to Chapel, they sat alongside them, encouraging them, joining in the actions during praise and worship, and then leading them back to class afterwards. The service was a joy-filled whole-school event for all!

During the message, we were visited by puppets Polly and Frankie, who explored the difference between “mega” and “super” and what it means to be a superhero. As soon as the word “superhero” was mentioned, in came—amid great fanfare… Superman! Our Year 12 leaders were great sports, dressing up as various heroes and villains. The villains cleverly exposed the weaknesses of each superhero. Just when it seemed like all hope was lost, in burst our ultimate hero character… Jesus!

I love the idea of Jesus as a superhero—our special friend with special abilities. He’s always on call, ready to listen whenever we have a need. Keen to come our rescue! But He’s clearly more than just a superhero, right?

The biggest difference between Jesus and the superheroes we highlighted, is that those superheroes are fictional characters. They are made-up figures from storybooks, movies, or comics. Even if they were real, we discovered that each had a major weakness or flaw.

Jesus, on the other hand, was—and is—real. He is the Son of God and our ultimate hero. We read about Him in the Bible, one of the oldest and most reliable history books in existence. Jesus isn’t an imitation. He has no weaknesses. He looks out for His friends.

Students were left with this challenge: Do we call on Him enough? Do we trust Him enough to help us deal with our problems or concerns? That might actually be our greatest weakness. That we try too often, to do things in our own strength, rather than relying on and calling out to Him. Amen?

With Christ as my superhero, there is nothing I need to fear!

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1 (NIV)

God keeps an eye on His friends, His ears pick up every moan and groan. God won’t put up with rebels; He’ll cull them from the pack. Is anyone crying for help? God is listening, ready to rescue you. If your heart is broken, you’ll find God right there; if you’re kicked in the gut, He’ll help you catch your breath. Disciples so often get into trouble; still, God is there every time. He’s your bodyguard, shielding every bone; not even a finger gets broken.Psalm 34:15–20 (The Message)

God bless,
