What Did You Do At School?

100 Days Smarter in Prep!

Our fabulous Prep students celebrated 100 Days of School in the most unforgettable way, by transforming into 100-year-olds! The classrooms were full of walking sticks, bushy eyebrows, oversized glasses, and even a few cheeky moustaches.

The children had a blast completing an activity all about what life might be like when they turn 100. We created wrinkly paper bag puppet versions of their future selves—complete with pipe cleaner glasses and white cotton wool hair! Later, we counted to 100 using colourful beads in tens, danced like groovy grannies and grandpas, and perfected our best “old person” voices. Our classrooms sparkled with giant 100 balloons and glittering metallic curtains, adding to the festive vibe. A massive thank you to all our wonderful parents for going above and beyond with the costumes.

We were truly blown away by the creativity and support. It was a delightful day full of laughter, learning, and special memories to last a lifetime. Here’s to 100 days smarter!

Year 1

This term, Year 1 students have been learning how to write procedural texts. They are developing their ability to use verbs at the beginning of sentences, write clear and logical steps, and include diagrams to support their instructions. One engaging lesson saw students use playdough to create animals; then carefully document the steps they took to make them.

Earlier in the term, students also took part in a special extracurricular literacy challenge. In teams, they used selected letters to build the longest words they could. It was a close and exciting contest between the two teams, with the boys winning two out of the three rounds!

We are proud of the way our students are working together, thinking creatively, and celebrating each other’s efforts. As they learn and grow, we’re reminded that God gives us all unique gifts to be used for His glory.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. Colossians 3:23

Year 2

In Year 2, we have been busy exploring subtraction in Mathematics. We’ve been developing our skills by learning how to visualise subtraction problems and recognise answers without always needing to count—this is called subitising.

During Reading lessons, we have been learning how to make predictions about what might happen in a text. We’ve been using clues from the text, our knowledge of other stories, and our own experiences to make thoughtful predictions before and during reading.

In Integrated Studies, we have started a new topic called Celebrating Differences. We are looking forward to learning about different cultures and traditions.

Year 3

Over the last two weeks, students have analysed procedures like detectives, scouring for clues that tell us the intended audience of the author. We discovered that bright, bold colours, simple dot points and lots of pictures indicate that the text was written for a younger audience, such as Prep to Year 3. However, if there is less colour, long, detailed paragraphs and minimal images, the author had people aged Year 6 or older in mind.

Excitingly, Year 3 are becoming familiar with using coins to calculate totals and change in our class shop. This is in preparation for when we run the Father’s Day Stall in Week 5—we can hardly wait!

Year 4

This term, our Integrated Studies unit is titled In Someone Else’s Shoes. We’re exploring the everyday challenges faced by individuals with various disabilities and learning how to respond with empathy, respect, and compassion. We learned how to sign our names using Auslan, a meaningful step toward inclusive communication. We also took a thoughtful walk to the canteen and back, intentionally avoiding the stairs to experience how accessibility features support those with mobility needs. It was a simple yet eye-opening activity that helped us appreciate the importance of inclusive design in our school environment.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to welcome members of our school community who have experience working with people with disabilities. We’re preparing thoughtful questions and can’t wait to learn from their insights as we continue to grow our understanding and awareness.

Year 5

It has been a whirlwind start to Term 3 in Year 5. In Integrated Studies, we have explored issues that impact children around the world. Did you know that two billion people each year suffer from malnutrition? We are about to begin investigating a range of aid agencies and will discover ways we can help children in need. In Mathematics, we have been learning to use and apply a variety of mental and written subtraction strategies. We have enjoyed applying these skills to real-life situations, such as planning a party and organising a road trip around Australia.

Year 6

In Integrated Studies this term, Year 6 has been investigating the topic of Care For The Kids and have explored some of the issues they face such as malnutrition, poverty, illiteracy and sanitation. These are extremely big problems for much of the world’s population that need to be addressed. We have also looked at different families who rely on child labour to survive. We have worked in groups, using statistics to create infographics about the hardships these children (as well as families) endure every single day. This week we’re looking into different organisations that protect children’s rights. Nearing the end of this topic, we shall create multiple heart-throbbing, gut-wrenching poems, that will leave you speechless.
