Classroom Reports

Foundation

We’re thrilled to welcome Miss Ellie, our student teacher, to the classroom! The children have enjoyed getting to know her and are already learning lots through her engaging lessons.

A big well done to all the students for their fantastic effort at the House Sports! Everyone gave it their best and showed great team spirit. We’re now looking forward to the Calder Sports coming up this week – go team!

➖ Maths – Exploring Subtraction

In maths, we’ve been working hard on subtraction, with a special focus on understanding the concept of difference. This means comparing two amounts to find out how much more or less one is than the other – a tricky idea, but the students are making great progress.

📖 Literacy – Mr Men Adventures

This week in literacy, we’ve been listening to stories from the Mr Men series and focusing on Mr Brave. We’ve even been doing our own writing about what makes someone brave – and speaking of bravery...

🍓 Smoothie Tasting with Year 9

The Year 9 students created a very interesting smoothie recipe for us to try – and we were very brave to give it a taste! Some thought it was delicious... others ……..?

Year 3/4A

It has been a fantastic start to the term for 3/4A, filled with exciting events and new experiences! Students participated in these extremely well, even if they were feeling nervous prior to commencing. Below are some snippets of what we’ve been up to:

Cooking Pizza with Miss Douglass

We were thrilled when Miss Douglas invited us into the brand-new Food Technology room to make our very own pizzas. The students loved every step, from rolling out the dough, carefully choosing their toppings, and, of course, enjoying their delicious creations. We might just have a few future chefs in our midst!

Athletics

We were so proud of students for actively participating in every event, giving it their best try! Participating is an important aspect of athletics at Wedderburn College. Thank you to all families for your support throughout the day, students dressed in their house colours looked amazing!

Smoothie Bike

We were lucky enough to have year 9 students take us for a lesson on Monday that involved making a smoothie by riding a spin bike! Year 9’s were terrific at engaging the class and providing a unique experience for us!

Lastly, as you may be aware, our CFA visit was cancelled due to the rescheduling of athletics. Our next CFA visit will now be planned for term 4, week 7 (we will notify you of the day and time as the date approaches). Thank you for your understanding regarding this matter.

Mr Campbell, 3/4A Classroom Teacher

Year 3/4B

Term 3 has started off with lots of fun for grade 3/4B. We have dived into learning but have also done lots of fun activities outside of the classroom!

In English, we have been learning about natural disasters and focusing our stories and information reports on these natural disasters. In reading, we have been focusing on class texts, we have read the short story of The Iron Man and are now reading Matilda, which the kids have been loving!

In maths, we have been learning about multiplication, angles and time.

In Inquiry, we have been exploring biological sciences and learning about living things, their habitats and adaptations.

We have also been lucky enough to get a chance to try out the new food tech room with Ms Douglas last Friday, where we got the chance to make and cook pizzas.

We had our whole school Athletics last Tuesday and everyone did an amazing job at participating, which is what we aim to see! Thanks to all the parents and carers who came and supported as well!

We are looking forward to Book Week next week and can't wait to see everyone dress up for the parade next Tuesday the 19th of August.

Year 5/6

The Grade 5/6 classroom is starting to feel more like a comfortable working and learning space. Thankyou to the students and families, who established the routine of nightly reading and completing weekly homework. It is expected that students do this. This week, Mrs Turnbull and Mrs McKenzie will be following this up with positive reinforcement, as well as catch ups session students.

Next week we will celebrate Book Week. Many students are very excited and designing some amazing costumes.

Week 4 Already!

It’s hard to believe we’re already in Week 4 — the term is flying by!

Athletics Sports – A Huge Success!

The Athletics Sports on Tuesday were a fantastic display of participation, teamwork, and school spirit. Well done to the Year 11 students who turned up, dressed up, and participated with enthusiasm — you truly demonstrated our school values of Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience.

A huge thank you to all those who helped out in some way, whether it be helping with events, assisting in the set up or pack up thank you all so much!

Congratulations to Ansett, worthy winners on the day, and to our individual age group champions Noah and Jade for their outstanding performances.

We also wish the very best of luck to Noah and Jade representing us at the NCD Athletics Sports this week — go out there and give it your best!

Looking Ahead – Book Week!

Next week is Book Week — let’s make sure we are ready for the parade. We can’t wait to see the outfits that you come up with!

And remember, keep reading and logging your minutes for the Reading Marathon!

Mr G’s Study Tip:"Don’t just read your notes — test yourself on them. Asking yourself questions forces your brain to work harder, which helps you remember more for longer."

Have a great week!

VM

Our VM students have embarked on a new project- renovating the primary cubby house. Students have started sanding the cubby and replacing the old weatherboards. We look forward to sharing the final reveal.

Students have also been working on the bikes and other projects around the school.

In the classroom, students have been grappling with Workplace Harassment and Bullying case studies to develop skills in identifying and responding as employees.

Music News

Primary students are enjoying studying Australian Bush Music, focusing on the brilliant work of Banjo Paterson. Students have enjoyed singing Waltzing Matilda, listening to The Man From Snowy River and discussing the ideas in Clancy of The Overflow. Discussing the communicated ideas and meaning in music is an important focus of the curriculum, and I encourage you to discuss the meaning of songs when you're listening to music at home, driving in the car etc.

To immerse ourselves in the sounds of the Australian Bush, we took a walk to the bushland at the rear of the school. We used our 5 sense to take in our surrounds. Upper Primary then used these findings to channel their inner Banjo Paterson and begin writing their own Australian Bush songs. I look forward to sharing some of these examples in the coming weeks.

Lower primary used their findings to recreate the sounds and layer the sounds to mimic the Australian Bush.

It was delightful to see the students 'light up' in the bushland. With the weather warming up, it's a nice opportunity to go for a bush walk with your child and watch them discuss their 5 senses.

Literacy News

Reading at home

This document is designed to help you to deepen your child's reading comprehension when they read at home. It contains questions you can ask to check how much was understood of what was read. It is based on some key, evidence-based comprehension strategies.

Sometimes, young people can sound out all the words on a page but they are not taking in what they are reading. Sometimes their minds drift while they're saying the words.

You could ask these questions after they read, or while you're reading with them, or ask the question before they read and then return to answer it when they're finished.  If they're unable to answer the questions, there will be be an evening session with strategies later this term (with dinner provided!)

If you'd like to know more, please feel free to get in touch with Mr Iser.

Reading Olympics Opening Ceremony

While the reading marathon had been underway for some time, we're officially kicking off the Reading Olympics on Tuesday the 19th of August with our Opening Ceremony!

This will take place following the Book Week parade (Huddle time, 12.10pm - 1pm) and will involve a short ceremony and then our second event, the Reading Relay. The relay will be a bit different this year, and comprise a tag-team Kahoot! quiz battle royale between Jacka and Ansett!

The Opening Ceremony will be followed by a BBQ at lunchtime. All parents, carers, and grandparents are welcome to attend.

Science News

National Science Week at Wedderburn College

As part of National Science Week, we were fortunate to welcome local arborist Mr Peter Goegan, who spoke with our Year 7–10 students on Monday. Peter generously shared his passion for working with trees, along with insights into the skills and knowledge required in arboriculture—a career that is currently in high demand. Students learned about the science behind tree health, the importance of sustainable land management, and the diverse pathways available in this field, from hands-on climbing and pruning to consulting and environmental conservation.

Peter’s engaging presentation connected science learning to real-world applications, sparking curiosity and opening students’ eyes to career opportunities they may not have considered before. His visit was a reminder that science is not only about laboratories and experiments—it’s also about working outdoors, protecting our natural environment, and making a lasting impact in the community.
