School Council Update: Traffic Management at Tarneit Rise Primary School

Meeting with Wyndham City Council – Monday 28th July

The Tarneit Rise Primary School Council recently met with Darren Jones from Wyndham City Council to discuss traffic management and pedestrian safety around our school. This follows growing concerns from the community about traffic flow and student safety, especially during peak drop-off and pick-up times.

Proposed Improvements for Pedestrian Safety

Wyndham City Council, in conjunction with the Department of Transport, is currently assessing a range of improvements to enhance pedestrian safety near the school. These include:

  • A signalized pedestrian crossing, with possible features such as zebra stripes, a raised “wombat crossing,” give way to pedestrian signs, and potentially orange flashing lights.
  • The project is being considered under the Department of Transport's Annual School Crossing Program, which reviews locations based on safety data and infrastructure needs.

Planning & Approval Timeline

While we are optimistic about progress, the following factors are currently in play:

  • The Department of Transport is investigating feasibility, budgeting, design, and required infrastructure.
  • A lengthy approval process is involved due to external agency requirements and safety assessments.
  • The proposed location for the new crossing is likely to be between Cottesloe Boulevard and Redcliffe Drive, and must be positioned a specific distance away from the existing supervised school crossing.

Pending approvals, the estimated timeline for implementation is within the next 12 months, ideally within this financial year. However, Wyndham City Council has emphasized that it is difficult to provide a firm timeframe at this stage.

Community Engagement & Next Steps

When the project is ready to proceed, Wyndham Council will initiate community engagement, including letter drops and consultation with nearby residents. Tarneit Rise Primary School will ensure that families are notified and kept informed throughout the process.

It was also emphasized during the meeting that the most effective deterrent to traffic incidents is behavioural change. We urge all families and community members to follow road rules at all times, especially in school zones. Enforcement measures, including fines, are in place to encourage safer driving behaviour.

If you have any questions or feedback about the proposed changes or road safety near the school, please don’t hesitate to contact the Wyndham City Council via email mail@wyndham.vic.gov.au or via phone 1300 023 411.

Together, we can make our school community safer for everyone.
