Visual Arts News

Hello Families,

It’s been a fun and creative few weeks in the art room! Students across all year levels have been diving into exciting new projects, experimenting with different techniques, and developing their artistic skills. It’s been a joy to see their enthusiasm and creativity shine through.

Prep

Prep students have been learning about bees. They created their own bees with a hexagon background using sponge painting techniques, then carefully drew and coloured their bees. They also explored blending with chalk pastels to create a glowing star artwork.

Grade One

Grade One students explored the art element of texture. They created mixed media snail artwork by layering and scrunching tissue paper, and then made vibrant toucan pieces using line and shape. They finished their toucans with watercolours and bold black pastel outlines.

Grade Two

Grade Two students also focused on texture, designing mixed media flower artworks using tissue paper to add depth. They practiced chalk pastel blending techniques to complete a soft, colourful tulip drawing.

Grade Three

Grade Three students worked on a Van Gogh-inspired Sunflowers piece, learning about value—tints, tones, and shading—while blending pastels to show light and shadow. They also explored the northern lights, using smudging and blending with pastels to recreate this natural wonder.

Grade Four

Grade Four students explored Pop Art, creating bold artworks inspired by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. They chose a pop icon, used fluro pastel colours, and alternated colours between the icon and background in each square. They’ve also started a cactus sketch, learning techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling.

Grade Five

Grade Five students have been learning about colour schemes, expanding their knowledge of analogous and complementary colours. They created petal templates to cut patterned and plain paper, arranging them to reflect their chosen colour scheme. They've also begun a research project, sketching famous landmarks from countries they’re exploring.

Grade Six

Grade Six students used monochrome chalk pastels to create echidna artworks, focusing on mid-tones, shadows, and highlights. They’ve also started constructing 3D portraits using various thicknesses of cardboard, thinking critically about how best to represent each facial feature.
