Grade 3 Community News

Dear Year 3 Families,
We’ve had a fantastic few weeks in Grade 3 as Term 3 rolls on! A big thank you to all families for supporting our school fundraisers, including the Casual Dress Friday on August 8th – the students looked great and helped raise funds for the Grade 6 Graduation. Looking ahead, we’re excited to celebrate Bastille Day on Thursday, August 15th, with a French flair across the school! And of course, don’t forget Book Week Day on Thursday, August 22nd – a highlight for many children (and teachers!). We can’t wait to see everyone’s creative costumes (remember, it can be things you have already at home) and their love of reading shine. Merci and happy reading!
Knowledge Building Unit (Reading and Writing)
Students have enjoyed reading and exploring our text, The Iron Man, written by Ted Hughes. Students have been practicing their reading fluency each day by reading a passage about the text with a partner and on Wednesdays writing a short summary. At home, you can support your child’s understanding by asking your child questions about the text, such as what is their favourite part so far, and questions about Iron Man or Hogarth ( a character in the text).
In writing, students have been working hard writing detailed information reports with structured body paragraphs. Students have been demonstrating their incredible learning and knowledge of the mineral Iron by writing detailed paragraphs about it, including where it is found, what people can make with it, and why it’s an essential mineral in the world. This includes students using subheadings, topic sentences, supporting details, and a concluding sentence to support their paragraph writing.
Numeracy
In numeracy, the students have been working on telling the time skills. This includes reading and saying the time on an analogue clock to the quarter hour, to five-minute intervals, to the minute, writing digital times, matching analogue and digital times, converting analogue and digital times, and solving problems using analogue and digital times.
In Week 5, students will explore and learn about 3D shapes. This includes naming 3D shapes, describing the features of 3D shapes, identifying 3D shapes in the environment, building, constructing, and comparing 3D shapes.
Vocabulary
Our target words this fortnight include our Week 4 words of writhing, speck, strides, declare, threatening, and dismay.
Our week 5 words are challenge, astounded, fiercely, astonishment, billowed, and blissful.

Students enjoy sharing their learning of these words with you. We encourage you to support and surprise them by using these words when the opportunity presents itself.
Friendly Reminders
- We ask students to maintain their reading nights by reading for 20 minutes each school day and then record their reading time in their student reading journals to track their progress. Young readers who read frequently develop essential reading skills.
- We thank and remind families to continue supporting their children by charging their iPads and bringing their headphones ready for each school day.
