SPOTLIGHT ON THE CLASSROOMS

K-2 CLASSROOM
K–2 students have been exploring Procedural Texts as part of our Informative Text unit, and it's been both educational and exciting! Last week, we focused on following and understanding procedural language by creating our very own paper planes. Students carefully listened to and followed step-by-step instructions, helping them recognise the structure and purpose of a procedure.
As we worked through each step, we paused to identify and discuss key language features commonly found in procedural texts. Students practised spotting verbs (like fold, crease, throw), nouns (such as paper, wing, nose), and adjectives (like sharp, long, straight) that helped clarify the actions and materials involved.
Once the planes were built, the fun truly took off—literally! Students were thrilled to test out their creations by flying them around the classroom and outside. We even had mini “flight competitions” and reflection discussions about what made some planes fly further or straighter than others, encouraging students to use procedural language to explain and improve their designs.
3-6 CLASSROOM
During Science lessons in Years 3-6, we have been studying the Solar System and the effects of the sun. Last Friday, we conducted an experiment examining solar power and its application in our society. To develop a basic understanding of how solar panels work, students created a solar oven using materials they could find at home.
We invited Transition and the K-2 students to join us in our experiment. Although we did not have an ideal day with the temperature, we were still able to see how the sun’s reflection created enough heat to melt the chocolate on our biscuits. There was much excitement as students tucked into their warm treats.
