CISSA Sport

St Augustine’s CISSA teams closed out the season with an outstanding final round, recording four wins and a draw. Saints secured dominant victories in AFL (70-30), Basketball (64-50), Touch Football (9-1), and Volleyball, while our Football team fought hard for a 1-1 draw. These strong performances earned all five teams a place in the Premier Division Semi-Finals.

In the Semi-Finals, our AFL side booked their Grand Final spot with a commanding 107-0 win over Redlynch State College. The Basketball team edged out Peace Lutheran in a thrilling 65-63 clash, while our Football team overcame Trinity Bay 2-1. Saints Touch Football team triumphed 12-8, and our Volleyball team completed in straight-sets 2-0 ambushing Trinity Bay. This clean sweep saw all five Saints teams qualify for Grand Finals — a first in recent memory.

In the Grand Finals:

  • AFL: Saints defeated Redlynch State College 47-23 in a competitive contest, with Gus Quilty named Player of the Final.
  • Basketball: The team capitalised on home court advantage at Lennon Hall to beat Redlynch 66-53.
  • Football: After a 0-0 draw with St Mary’s, Saints clinched the title 6-5 in a tense penalty shootout.
  • Touch Football: Despite missing Peninsula representatives, the team pushed Trinity Bay all the way but fell just short, losing 7-6 in their first defeat of the season.
  • Volleyball: Mr Elliott’s side entered the final as underdogs against undefeated Cairns High but pulled off a stunning 2-0 upset to bring the trophy back to Saints.

These results capped off a remarkable CISSA campaign for St Augustine’s, culminating in being named Overall Boys Champion School and Overall Champion School.

A huge thank you to our dedicated coaches for their tireless efforts throughout the season:

  • Mr Rigby and Mr Newman (AFL)
  • Mr Chapman (Basketball)
  • Mr Sorensen (Football)
  • Mr Brimstone (Touch Football)
  • Mr Elliott and Old Boy Aidan Prestipino (Volleyball)

Our teams’ success would not have been possible without their commitment.

Aaron Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge Rugby League

Saints Aaron Payne Cup team opened the season with a game against Holy Spirit College in Townsville. Ben Walker opened the scoring within 30 seconds scoring a long-range try.

The onslaught continued as Saints ran in 12 tries to Holy Spirit’s 1.

Saints took on the highly fancied Kirwan SHS in Round 2. Saints Cowboys Challenge team fought hard throughout their match but were ultimately outsized and outclassed, losing 38-0. Our First XIII conceded two early tries to go down 12-0 after 12 minutes. However, the boys showed their grit and class to go into half time at 16-6 down after a Tristian Martin try. Saints conceded another two tries after half time but refused to go away, scoring two more tries courtesy of Ben Walker and Tristian Martin’s second try to take the score to 22-18 with 14 minutes to go. Unfortunately, Kirwan managed to score a final try to secure a 26-18 victory. Despite the results, Saints showed that they are a team on the up in the competition.

Round 3 saw us travel to Townsville to take on Mackay State High School. Our Cowboys Challenge team got off to a fast start with Brayth Miller scoring the opening try. Despite this, Mackay hit back and seized the momentum running away with a 40 – 10 victory. Our The First XIII earnt a scrappy 26 – 18 victory. Saints scored the first try in the opening set through a precise cut out ball from Ben Walker to Elai Williamson to open the scoring.  In a game where Saints struggled to hit their straps, Cooper Meares led the way, running in three tries in a dominant performance in the front row. Daniel Brennan also crossed for a try in the 5 try to 3 victory. Our boys take on local rivals Trinity Bay on Monday afternoon at Trinity Bay.

FQ Futsal titles

St Augustine’s entered three teams (one opens and two U13s) into the FQ Futsal titles in Week 5.  St Augustine’s U13s red team opened their day with a pool game against Cairns SHS, losing 3-1. They bounced back in their second game defeating St Andrew’s blue 12-2 to finish second in their pool. St Augustine’s blue topped their pool with and 8-0 win over St Augustine’s orange, a 3-3 draw against Bentley Park College, progressing straight to the semi-finals. Saints Red then defeated St Andrew’s Orange 7-2. This set up an all-Saints cross-over match in the semi-finals. Saints Red proved to experienced for the blue team, winning 11-1, to set up a rematch in the grand final against Cairns High. Equipped with a new game plan from coach Cristian Couto and confidence after some strong performances. The boys were on their game and didn’t give Cairns High any opportunities, winning 6-3 to secure the championship.

Saints Opens team went through the pool games undefeated winning 10-0 against St Stephen’s, 8-2 against Cairns High, 23-4 against St Andrew’s, and 8-4 against Bentley Park College. The boys then took on Cairns High in the Grand Final. After a long day, the boys came home in a tight back and forth encounter, winning 5-4.

Both age groups have now qualified for the North Queensland Championship in Townsville later this year. Thank you to Cristian Couto from CC Futbol for your assistance on the day.
