Maths Comp Brings Out the Best in Budding Mathematicians

Nine students from Years 7, 8 and 9 recently represented Saints at the third annual JCU–Newman Maths Competition. This year the format changed, with students competing individually rather than in teams, as in previous years. Each year level included approximately 30 participants from schools across the Cairns region.

Special congratulations to Kevin Wang (Year 7) and Shuntaro Sato (Year 8), who both achieved 2nd place in their respective divisions. Well done, gentlemen – we look forward to seeing what next year brings.

Saints Students Recognised in Urban Design Competition

The Cairns City Urban Precincts Regeneration Project, led by Cairns Regional Council (CRC), has been exploring what  the council can do to increase housing and liveability within the CBD and neighbouring precincts. The project is generating plans for how to enhance the city’s established identity and make it a great place to live as our population grows.

As part of the project, the CRC ran the school-based Cairns Iconic Bus Stop Design Competition. The competition contributed to the project by fostering discussions about public transport and placemaking, highlighting what young people value most about Cairns. Entrants had to design a bus stop that reflected the spirit of Cairns. Ten students from Year 11 Design and two Year 10 Art students submitted entries after participating in workshops with two council architects.

A presentation night for the competition winners was held at the Cairns Museum and Historical Society early this month. All the St Augustine's entries formed part of the display walls, along with many other entries from students of other schools. All the entries were outstanding, but special congratulations go to Marlon Sandoval who was awarded runner-up and Jett Cram who was awarded a highly commended in a very tight competition.

Pizza Perfection in Year 7

Year 7 Food Technology students have been busy preparing for their upcoming practical exam by making pizzas from scratch. They learned how to make their own dough and experimented with a variety of toppings to suit their personal tastes. This hands-on task not only developed their cooking skills but also encouraged creativity and decision-making in the kitchen. The boys should be proud of their efforts and the delicious results they achieved.
