Gospel Reading: John 14:23–29 (NRSV Catholic Youth Bible)

Jesus answered him, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words, and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. I have said these things to you while I am still with you."

"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe."

Summary:

In this passage, Jesus is speaking to His disciples shortly before His crucifixion. He reassures them that even though He will be leaving, they will not be alone. His love, the Father's presence, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit will remain with those who love Him and keep His word.

✨ Key Themes and Reflection:

1. Love and Obedience

Jesus connects love with obedience—not as a burden, but as a relationship. Those who truly love Him will naturally desire to follow His teachings. In return, God makes His dwelling with them—signifying deep communion and presence.

2. The Role of the Holy Spirit

Jesus introduces the Advocate, also called the Holy Spirit, who will teach and remind the disciples of everything He has said. This promise assures us that we are never left to navigate life or faith alone—the Spirit helps us understand and live out Christ’s words.

3. Peace Beyond the World’s Peace

Jesus gives His peace—different from temporary or superficial peace that the world offers. It’s a peace that calms the heart and removes fear, rooted in the security of God’s love and presence.

4. Hope in Jesus’ Departure

Jesus prepares the disciples for His departure, encouraging them to rejoice rather than grieve. His return to the Father is part of God’s plan, and knowing it in advance helps them (and us) to believe when things unfold.

🕊️ Reflection Questions:

  • How do I respond to Jesus' call to love Him through keeping His word?
  • In what areas of my life do I need to receive His peace instead of fear?
  • Am I open to the Holy Spirit teaching and guiding me daily?
