Last week our Foundation students had an exciting time building their gross motor skills by practising some special kicking techniques – all with the help of balloons and soft balls! Our focus was on two kicks:
The Penguin Kick – using the inside of the foot
The Ballerina Kick – using the pointed toe
The students loved exploring these movements by kicking balloons gently across the room - perfect for helping them learn control, timing, and coordination. We also set up colourful cones and fun targets to aim at with soft balls. Everyone had a go at using their penguin and ballerina kicks to knock over cones, hit targets, and cheer each other on.
Our Year 1/2 students have been working hard on mastering the overarm throw – a key skill for building strength, coordination, and accuracy. Using a variety of equipment including soft balls, tennis balls, and bean bags, students practised their technique:
Standing side-on,
Reaching back with their throwing arm,
Stepping forward and releasing towards the target with a strong follow-through!
To make the practice fun and challenging, we set up different targets such as bowling pins, hoops, and baskets. The students tested their aim and power, with lots of cheers when targets were knocked down. This activity helped improve throwing skills, as well as encouraging teamwork, focus, and a positive sporting attitude.
Division Cross Country -
A huge congratulations to Abel A, Samuel B, Willow McV, and Nate B for their outstanding effort and perseverance at the Cross Country event last Wednesday at Hastings Foreshore! Your dedication and determination were truly inspiring—well done!
Last week, our Year 3–6 students brought their energy and enthusiasm to the field as they focused on developing key AFL skills – particularly kicking and marking.
To warm up, we played a fast-paced and inclusive game called ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors, Run!’ It’s a fun twist on the classic game, all within a team relay format. This game got everyone moving, thinking fast, and working together – with lots of cheering along the way!
Students practised kicking with accuracy and control, learning how to position their body, follow through, and aim for their target. We also explored marking techniques, with students working on timing, hand-eye coordination, and body positioning to take clean catches. We played a short game of AFL 9’s, a non-contact and modified version of Aussie Rules.
On Wednesday, 11th June, all Year 5/6 students will take part in the ‘Lightning Premiership’, a round robin competition against our District Schools. They will compete in Soccer, Netball, and AFL. Good luck to everyone - play hard, show great sportsmanship, and have fun!
SKRRRRRT went the bus as it stopped. Everyone stood up and went outside. The footy and soccer people started to get ready and once we had all got ready we started to walk over to where we all were playing. Then the whistle blew for the kick off. For the first couple of minutes nothing happened until Henry and Finn started a counter attack. Henry had the ball, he shot and SCORED.
Again Finn and Henry did it! The score was 2-0. At half time, Chase went in goal and then the whistle blew for the second half. There were no goals for a couple of minutes. Mr Duryea scored a nice goal eventually. After a while, it was 5-2 and then in the last half I scored a beautiful free kick from halfway to make it 7-2! At full time and we all shook hands.

Pow as Archie kicked the first goal of the game! We all ran to the middle to get the ball up again. Me and Archie handballed it down the line to our forward and then Archie kicked a point. Toby was on the other team because they didn’t have enough players. Toby kicked to them and I got the mark and I looked at my surroundings and all of sudden Ballam Park was behind me. I went for the kick and I faked. I got closer to the goal and kicked a goal and everyone gave me a high five. At the end we won 70 to 30 or something like that. Overall we had a great day.

As I ran on to the soccer pitch all I could hear was the sound of my heartbeat. I was playing right midfielder and the other mids were Tilly and Alexis. We also had Sienna and Emi in striker and our defenders were Taylah, Indi and Macie. We were playing against Ballam Park. Suddenly the whistle blew and we started to play. It was super difficult but then Sienna scored our first goal. Swish went the net and from there we just kept getting goals!
Tilly scored our second and third then I scored our fourth then Sienna scored our last one. We won 5 to nil. It was so fun!

It was the 30th of May, the day we are going to Ballam Park for interschool sport. As we stepped on the bus, our favourite bus driver, Aiden, was the one that was going to drive us. I was seated with Elion, a kid that knows all about the world's wars and every country. He sometimes even interrupts us in the middle of learning and starts talking about Korea and Japan and other countries. So that was the thing, he was talking to me the whole ride to Ballam Park. As we arrived, the soccer people put on their boots, mouth guard and shin pads when suddenly the other team arrived and we walked to the pitch. I wasn’t able to play because I had a broken wrist earlier in the week! I broke my growth plate so I was the coach of the boys soccer team.
Beep- the game started. Bang- Henry M scored the first goal. Bang- Nicolas was running with the ball and did a travel, a pass and Henry finished it with a tap-in, 2:0. Kick off, Henry M took the ball and passed it to Finn, he became Prime Neymar at Barcelona. He dribbled past, through defenders and scored an amazing goal to make it 3:0. Beep- first half was finished. The scores were, St Brendan's with three goals, Ballam Park Primary, 0. But it would not be long and Ballam Park Primary scored two lucky goals. We were winning still, Finn got a foul and I told Byron to take the free kick. He banged it, a goal from 5 metres. Finn scored one more goal making the final score 6:2 . We shook hands and hopped on the bus and went back to school.

I couldn’t wait for Friday to come - it was time for our third Interschool Sports game, leading up to the Lightning Premiership.
My team and I were buzzing with excitement as we got off the bus and made our way toward our opponents for the day. We noticed the other team was already on the court warming up, and we couldn’t help but wonder how good they’d be.
We started our own warm-up from half-court, getting focused and ready. There were definitely a few nerves, but once the game began, they quickly disappeared.
The match was intense. Both teams played hard, but we pushed through every challenge and came out with a win!
Now, with that game behind us, all our attention turns to preparing for the Lightning Premiership.

Today was our last interschool footy match before the Lightning Premiership. We jumped on the bus, ready to head to Ballam Park Primary School. It was only about a 10-minute ride, but our driver, Aiden, was really fun, so the time flew by.
When we arrived, we had to wait a little while for everyone to get ready. Once Ballam Park came out, we walked over to their amazing footy oval and started warming up.
As soon as the game started, everyone on our team was keen to get the ball. But after the first quarter, we noticed the game was getting a bit one-sided. So, our coach, Miss Waldock, sent Archie, Toby, and I over to help Ballam Park by kicking a few goals for them to keep the game fun and fair.
In the second quarter, Archie, Toby, and I kicked back-to-back goals. Thankfully, it helped the other team feel like they were still in the game. We only had time for one more quarter, so we stayed on the same mixed teams and helped them kick even more goals.
At the end of the match, we shook hands and said "good game" to all the players. We came home with the win, but in the end, it was just a friendly match — and everyone had a great time.
