🌱 LITERACY - Reading
Students are finalising their exploration of Waves by Donna Rawlins this week. This thought-provoking picture storybook presents a range of narratives that reflect the challenging journeys of immigrants and refugees throughout Australia’s migration history. Students are examining the text through vocabulary study, figurative language, illustration analysis, key themes, and character experiences.
What you can do at home
Encourage your child to discuss the stories they’ve encountered in Waves. You might also like to share your own family’s cultural background or stories of migration, whether to Australia or elsewhere, to build deeper personal connections to the themes in the book.
Writing
Grade 5 students will be reflecting on the amazing activities they experienced on camp and writing about them.
All students will begin creating their own picture storybooks that explore themes of cultural diversity. They will draw on everything they have learned this term about migration, identity and different cultural experiences. Each book will include a clear message, meaningful themes, and a focus on one aspect of cultural diversity. This project gives students the opportunity to express their understanding creatively through both words and illustrations.
What you can do at home
Talk to your child about your own family’s cultural background, migration stories, or traditions. These conversations can help spark ideas and inspire the messages and themes they include in their own picture storybooks.
🌱 NUMERACY
In Mathematics, students are learning to compare, analyse and interpret a variety of data displays. They are exploring side-by-side column graphs and line graphs, and developing their understanding of key concepts such as mode and range. Students are also learning to think critically about data, including identifying how data can be presented or misrepresented in the media. These skills help students make sense of real-world information and become more informed, analytical thinkers.
What you can do at home
Along with the weekly 'Mathletics' tasks assigned for homework, students are encouraged to go to the 'My Numeracy' section of Essential Assessment to reinforce the skills and areas taught at school.
🌱 CBL
This term our Big Idea is Diversity, specifically focusing on cultural diversity. Grade 5 and 6 students will explore multicultural Australia, the waves of migration and how this has shaped our country.
Essential Question:
How does cultural diversity shape our identity and sense of belonging?
Guiding Questions:
- What does cultural diversity mean to us?
- How has living in a culturally diverse society enriched our lives?
- What challenges can people face in a culturally diverse society?
- How can we inspire people to value cultural diversity?
This week, students will also be working on the development of their picture storybooks during CBL. These sessions will give students time to plan, write and illustrate their stories, drawing on their personal experiences, class discussions and knowledge of cultural diversity.
🌱 HOMEWORK
Students are expected to complete homework on a weekly basis. This consists of
- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice
- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign
- 2 Nessy activities
This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads. Your child's teacher will check this homework on Friday.
🌿 REMINDERS
🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged.
DROP OFF AND PICK UP IN LANTANA
Please be mindful of the road signs on Lantana Road. It is a NO PARKING zone in front of the school during school start and finish times. To ensure a smooth and safe process, we have a designated pick-up system at the end of the day, where a teacher monitors and guides students into cars lined up in the queue. This system works efficiently when there are no parked cars breaching the signage during these times. Thank you for your cooperation.
