5/6 Learning News

✺ Wumindjika ✺
It’s been a productive and valuable few weeks in the 5/6 space. Our class meetings have helped keep communication open and created a safe space for everyone to reflect and share. The leaders are encouraging each other to grow and be their best, making a real difference in both our classroom and school community.
This week, we explored our creative sides with a camouflage butterfly task challenging ourselves to spot these well-hidden insects.

Our Learning
We’ve finished our novel Black Cockatoo and it’s been exciting to see the deep analysis learners have gained from this story. Through informative writing, we're exploring Mia’s journey as a character, examining the use of linking words and evidence from the text to support our ideas.
In Maths, we’ve moved into Probability and Chance. Learners have been conducting experiments and hypothesising outcomes like whether “rock” is really the most common move in rock, paper, scissors. They’re learning to present their findings using frequency and relative frequency tables in a hands-on and engaging exploration of data and predictions.
Community Project: Art Styles
This term, our whole learning community has come together to explore different art styles and how we use creativity as a way to tell stories. This week, learners were introduced to a range of techniques, including: line drawing, pattern, sketching and shading, collage.
Each learner experimented with two styles that will contribute to our final collaborative project. These sessions have not only encouraged connection and creativity but also given our 5/6 leaders a chance to shine, showcasing their patience, initiative, and growing maturity.
Reflections from our learners after the session:
I felt free because I didn't have to copy something
I felt good because I made a story
I felt creative because it's something I love doing
I felt really calm and connected to Aboriginal culture because I was using Aboriginal symbols
Science with Miss Bridgette
This week, our 5/6 learners were challenged to create something with functioning wheels. They researched, hypothesised, trialled different ideas, and ultimately succeeded in building machines that move! A great display of their creativity, problem-solving, and persistence.

Our Community
Seb has been working hard to bring his own Strathbogie Shire Monopoly to life. He designed and created the game pieces himself and brainstormed a range of local businesses and landmarks to feature in the game. We've loved playing with him!
This term during Choose Day afternoons, we’ve had a special visitor, my wonderful Nanny Trish. She's taught us the basics of knitting, and the kids have eagerly taken up finger knitting themselves, even running lunchtime sessions to teach others. These sessions have been a great display of persistence, resilience, and perseverance.
Sovereign Hill Camp
Our 5/6 learners are heading to Sovereign Hill Camp!
Departure: 8:00am from Rushworth on Wednesday, 28th May
Home: Around 3:00pm to Nagambie on Friday, 30th May
We’ll be spending the majority of our time outdoors, so make sure plenty of warm layers (pants, puffer jackets, beanies the works!) are packed to stay comfortable.
We’re all very excited to spend this time together, exploring and learning new things!
