1/2 Learning News

Hello Families,
We are approaching the halfway point of Term 2, can you believe it? Our learners have settled in well to our new routine and have absolutely loved having Maddy return on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Next week will look slightly different as I will be on camp with Shan and the 5/6 students, so on Thursday the children will have Miss Maree for our excursion to Shepparton & on Friday Miss Gab & Jacqui will have the children.
Have a lovely week ahead,
Gen
Literacy
We have revisited long vowel sounds and some of the ways these sounds are made this fortnight.
We have looked at ai and ay, ee and ea, oa and ow as well as y making a long i sound.
The children were challenged to write short stories using as many words with long vowel sounds as they could.
Maths
We have continued to look at measurement using informal units. We discussed why it might be important to know how to measure things without a ruler, and other ways we can check the length of something. We made handspan lengths using pieces of wool and the children were tasked with finding something in the classroom that was the same length as their handspan. We then used our prediction skills to estimate the amount of handspans an object outside was, before checking by measuring using our individual handspan lengths of wool.
National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday, we live streamed a reading of the story ‘The Truck Cat’ along with over 2 million other students for the annual simultaneous storytime. The author of The Truck Cat, Deborah Frenkel read the story of a cat, who becomes separated from his owner, then taken in by a kind stranger and how Truck Cat brings these two people together.
Following the story, the illustrator Danny Snell lead the children in a guided drawing of a cartoon cat, giving them time at the end to add a background and accessories to their cat in order to begin generating their own story.
