The Life of the School - Pupil Free Day Tomorrow

Another busy week at Croydon Hills Primary School has seen our Musical Excellence Choir compete at the Boroondara Eisteddfod, our Year 4s head off to the Melbourne Zoo (to complement their classroom learning unit ‘The World Around Us’), the Year 5 and 6 students compete in their second Interschool Sport Gala Day and and four of our students compete at School Sport Victoria's Eastern Metropolitan Region Cross Country!

Tomorrow is a pupil-free day to support teachers in the workload associated to constructing Semester 1 Student Achievement Reports.

School Reports Update - Changes to the Victorian Curriculum

Semester 1 Reporting

A note that this year, schools across Victoria are now reporting to a revised curriculum - Victorian Curriculum 2.0 for both English and Mathematics, as directed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). This means, there will be changes to how Mathematics is reported in 2025 and beyond.

In your child’s previous report, the teacher reported against the three strands of the achievement standard for Mathematics (Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability).

Under the Mathematics Curriculum 2.0, your child’s teacher will report against the achievement standard as a whole, providing a single, aggregated score.

As this is the first time reporting against the new curriculum, you will only see one ‘dot’ indicating their level of achievement. In Semester Two, you will see their previous result (from 6 months ago) and an indication of progress, as shown below.

Please keep an eye out for a Compass post which will explain the changes to reporting in more detail.  Below is a summary of what has changed due to the curriculum revisions if you are interested. However, there's no need to worry about the changes at home. Our dedicated teachers will continue to guide your child on their mathematical learning journey. We’ll keep you informed throughout the year, and you’re always welcome to reach out with any questions.

We look forward to sharing and celebrating student achievements during student-parent-teacher conferences which will be held early next term.

High level overview of Levels F–10 revisions

  • Six strands: Content is now organised under six strands—number, Algebra, Measurement, Space (formerly Geometry), Statistics, and Probability—with no sub-strands.
  • Proficiencies: The four proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Reasoning and Problem-solving have been embedded into the content descriptions and achievement standards.

Levels F–6 revisions

  • Mathematical Modelling: There is a greater emphasis on the processes of mathematical modelling and, from Level 3, statistical investigation and conducting repeated chance experiments.
  • Re-sequence of content: The content has been re-sequenced to provide students with more opportunities to consolidate and master key skills.
  • Computational thinking: There is a continued focus on computational and algorithmic thinking.
  • Probability: The Probability strand commences at Level 3.

Car Parking and Traffic Management Update

Thank you to our families for their increased vigilance regarding parking and traffic management. The School Council and school management team have worked extremely hard over the past few years to enhance our infrastructure and protocols to promote safe and free movement of traffic and parking. Our introduction to afternoon permit parking in the drop-off zone has been well received - thank you!

In the coming week, we will have the last of our signs installed, which will enhance parking and movement protocols further. The carparks will also be relined with additional disability and visitor carparks allocated in the lower carpark.

Reminder: Personal Property

At times, students and staff bring personal items of considerable value to school, including money. With that comes the risk of loss or damage. How our school approaches situations of such loss or damage is articulated in our Personal Property Policy. Of note, the school and Department of Education does not take responsibility for items of personal property that are lost, stolen or damaged at school or during school activities. Damage to personal property brought to school is the responsibility of the owner of that property.

Welcome To Our Newest Staff Member

We'd like to introduce Hayley Nixon, our new Wellbeing Officer. Following her induction and shadowing of Kelly Goodgame next week, Hayley will join us on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Have a great weekend everyone!
