In the Classroom

District Cross Country
Congratulations to Lindsay Ham on qualifying for his first District Cross Ccountry. Lindsay competed in Armidale on Monday 26 May, running the 2km event. Lindsay ran hard and finished 25th in the 8/9 years boy division. A terrific effort!
Ancient Egypt
K-6 students have been learning about life in Ancient Egypt during Semester 1. They have been learning how to write their names in hieroglyphics, learning to weave, dressing up in a photo booth with Egyptian Artefacts, painting King Tutankhamun's death mask and creating artworks of life on the Nile River. Here are some photos of their learning experiences.
The Green Thumbs
The Green Thumbs: The Green Thumbs have been busy planting broad bean seeds in the vegetable garden. They are proud to report that the garlic is growing. Leaves have been added to the compost, and we have been turning the compost to encourage the worms.
Mushrooms in Schools
It is very exciting news that Niangala Public School has been selected to participate in the Mushrooms in Schools program. Early next term we will receive a free mushroom growing kit from Australian Mushroom Growers Association. We will experience growing, cooking and eating mushrooms.
Healthy Harold & PDHPE Day
Life Education Van and PDHPE Day at Niangala – Thursday 19 June
On Thursday 19 June, students from Woolbrook and Yarrowitch travelled to Niangala for this year’s Life Education Van visit with Healthy Harold and a fun-filled PDHPE day.
Kirra Hazel, Life Education educator, delivered engaging sessions tailored to each age group:

All sessions were supported by the ever-popular Healthy Harold.
In addition to the Life Ed program, students took part in a range of hands-on health and wellbeing activities. These included:
- Hoop skipping and games
- Storytelling and Yoga to The Very Hungry Caterpillar
- Healthy cooking
- Yoga
- Mindfulness jars
The day was filled with fun, learning, and laughter. Students stayed active, connected with friends, and enjoyed a meaningful day focused on health and wellbeing.
Science, with straws, sticks and bricks
During our last two weeks in science, students have been busy making predictions and discoveries with experiments galore. Kindergarten and Year 1, explored the different properties of materials through the narrative of The Three Little Pigs. Joey and Matilda were given straws, Aubree and Holly had sticks and Elsie and Georgia worked their magic with Lego bricks to design and construct a house that the wolf could not blow down. On the day of testing, Harry kindly volunteered to be our wolf and operate the fan. To everyones surprise all three houses remained standing regardless of how much the wolf huffed and puffed. Holly's theory of using lots of masking tape proved to be useful in her design!
Another exciting investigation that unfolded in Year 3 Science was the discovering that when heat is applied to crayons, different colours melt at different rates. Lindsay was very chuffed to have predicted that the green crayon would take the longest to melt rather than the yellow, red and black crayons. But why was it so? More to come as we work through the results...
Viscosity was the word in the Year 5 science classroom. It refers to how runny something is. Valerie compared the viscosity of honey, tomato sauce, dishwashing liquid and shampoo. She set up a racetrack to see who would win the race. It was a close contest but shampoo took out the black and white flag. Watch this space for more Science in Term 3.
