Student Led Conferences

Tuesday 1st July and Wednesday 2nd July

Dear Karoo Community,

To help acknowledge and celebrate all of our talented students here at Karoo Primary School, we are very excited to be once again offering Student-Led Conferences at the end of Term 2.

We recognise that Student Led Conferences are a significant step towards enhancing student’s engagement in their own learning journey. They are a unique opportunity for students to take ownership of their learning and showcase their progress to parents and carers.

At Karoo Primary School, we continue to reflect, and always welcome feedback to improve our practice in everything we do, and Student Led Conferences have been no exception. At the end of last year’s Student Led Conferences, teachers, students and community provided feedback around their Student Led Conference experience. We appreciate the time our community took to offer feedback and taking students, teachers and parents/carers feedback into consideration, you will notice some adjustments to this year’s Student Led Conferences, including parent/carer time with the teacher.

Below is some further helpful information on how your child’s Student Led Conference will operate at Karoo Primary School in 2025.

How long is the Student Led Conference

Parents / carers will need to allow 15 minutes for each child in years Foundation-Yr. 6. The conference time will be spent with the teacher and your child focusing on the student’s areas of success, areas of learning in which the student needs support, future learning and student learning goals. Parents will have the opportunity to ask their child questions about their learning, discuss their goals and offer support as they work towards future leaning goals.

How will Student Led Conferences work at Karoo Primary School?

For students in Years Foundation -Yr. 6, Student Led Conferences will replace the formal Parent Teacher interviews typically held at the end of Term 2.

This year the conferences will be offered over 2 days and divided into two parts.

Part 1: 10 minutes

Students from Years F-6 will accompany their parents / carers to the conference and will be an active participant in the discussion about their academic achievements, challenges and goals. During the conference, students will lead the conversation, sharing examples of their work, reflecting on their learning experiences and discussing their strengths and areas for growth.

Part 2: 5 minutes

Time will be allocated during the conference for parent/carer and teacher communication. This is an opportunity where the parent/carer and teacher may wish to discuss further matters without the student present.

When are the Student Led Conferences?

Student Led Conferences will be held onsite at Karoo Primary School.

How do I book my Conference timeslot?

Bookings will open Tuesday 10th June and close Thursday 26th June

Further information will come, including the room location for your child’s Student Led Conferences and what to expect as a parent / carer during the Student Led Conference.

I know teachers and students are getting very excited about sharing their learning with you all.

Please remember, as always, parents and carers are encouraged to request an individual meeting with a child’s teacher at any time of the year to discuss their child's achievement and growth.

Curriculum Day Reflection

On Monday 19th May, our amazing staff attended a day of learning around teaching best practice in Mathematics. Our Maths Leaders Gemma Wild, Sarah Dobson, Tim Wilson, Simone Vitas along with Ashley Kuusela, facilitated the day. Our Learning Intention was to build our foundational knowledge in Maths, in order to create a shared understanding, that will support future learning of evidence-based teaching practices.

Staff had the opportunity to.

  • reflect on the characteristics of a great maths teacher
  • reflect on the characteristics of a great maths learner
  • explain the proficiencies in maths
  • understand the elements of VTLM 2.0 (Victorian Teaching and Learning Model)

This was an extremely insightful, productive and reflective day, and I know all our students here at Karoo Primary School will benefit from our teachers and ES growing knowledge around best practice in Maths. We are excited to continue our learning in Maths over the year.

Have a look at our amazing staff in action!

I look forward to seeing you all around our wonderful school and have a fantastic weekend.

Warm Regards,
