Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear parents,

Year 3/4 Excursion - Indigenous Landscapes Tour, Thursday 26th June

Year 3/4 students and teachers will be participating in a guided walking tour of Eltham North and surrounds. We will discover how European settlement impacted on Indigenous people and Indigenous landscapes such as waterways, fauna, flora, and the effects today on modern Eltham. This event is now available on COMPASS.

We are looking for parent helpers to attend the excursion. If you are interested, please contact your child's classroom teacher. Tour times will be shared in your class newsletter.

What's happened in Year 3/4 this week?

English – This week in writing the students finished composing their factual recount on the History of the Aboriginal Flag. Our reading comprehension strategy was Making Predictions, students were asked to make predictions and justify their responses using clues from the title, pictures or words in the book. We also investigated the suffix ‘-ful and -less’ by looking into its meaning and brainstorming words that use it.

Maths – Vertical addition and subtraction has been the focus of Maths. We were taught to ‘carry the one’ and the children have shared that that is what some parents have been teaching them at home. Please use the language of renaming as the students need to understand that it is not ‘1’ but 1 ten or 1 hundred. Please feel free to chat to us if you would like more explanation around this. Ask your child to explain this strategy to you.

This week in maths we have had a continued focus on assisting students to develop efficient mental and written strategies for solving worded problems involving addition and subtraction.

Inquiry – ‘How did the arrival of the first fleet impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders?’

Last week we learnt about Convicts aboard the First Fleet and the crimes they had committed. We heard about Life in the New Colony of NSW from the perspective of the Child convicts of Australia, and in partners we investigated life in 1788 for Convicts, Free Settlers and Indigenous Peoples.

This week in Inquiry, we investigated the nature of and consequences of contact between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the early traders, explorers and settlers. We discovered that although we have evidence that Aboriginal people were in contact with people from other countries before British settlement in 1788, continual contact only occurred after this date. This contact involved both conflict and on occasions, cooperation.

Life Education - Over the last 2 weeks the year 3/4 students were excited to chat to Harold again through the ‘bCyberwise’ session with Life Education. The session focused on being safe online- ‘be safe online = happy offline’, providing students with strategies to ensure safe online behaviour and interaction, discussing why some of the games and apps had particular age limits, and the importance of having body and mind breaks from technology. A useful website provided for cybersafety was https://www.esafety.gov.au/

At Home Project - Students should have completed the fourth component of their research Week 6 titled ‘Connections’ and returned this to their teacher. We expect students to be preparing for their presentation and writing their cue cards to be ready to present their projects in week 9 (beginning Monday 16th July). By next Friday - 6th July, students need to have shown their teacher how they plan to present their research to the class.

Homework - Homework this week continues to consist of:

  • Minimum 4 nights reading with at least 80 minutes per week recorded in school diary (Book title, pages read, minutes read).
  • Diary is to be brought to school each Friday signed by parents.
  • At home project – Students should now be completing their presentations ready to present next week.
  • Although not compulsory, we encourage your child to complete assigned Mathletic tasks.
