🌿 Celebrate National Threatened Species Day with Us! 🌿

On Thursday, September 7th, we will be celebrating National Threatened Species Day. This day is all about raising awareness and understanding of the importance of protecting our precious wildlife that is currently facing threats of extinction.

We will be hiding pictures of threatened animals in various areas around the school. Your mission? To find these hidden treasures and bring them to Miss Danaher.  Each student who successfully discovers and brings these pictures to Miss Danaher will receive a high bouncy ball!

National Threatened Species Day reminds us that we share our planet with a rich diversity of species, each contributing to the delicate balance of our ecosystem.  We're excited to see how this activity not only ignites a sense of curiosity and exploration among students but also sparks important conversations about the ways we can collectively contribute to protecting these threatened species and preserving the beauty of our natural world.

🥤 Smoothie Bike Morning Recap! 🚴‍♂️

On August 25th, our school hosted a Smoothie Bike Morning that left us all smiling. Thanks to the incredible Green Team and the support from Boroondara Council, the event was a hit.

Secondly, a huge thanks to everyone who pedaled their way to delicious smoothies. Your enthusiasm powered the blenders, showcasing both your energy and commitment to sustainability.

This event was a tasty reminder that small actions can make a big difference for our planet.

Send in a Sustainability Tip

We're on a mission to make sustainability simple and impactful, so we would like to introduce this new initiative. Ideally, this will inspire you to make some positive changes in your household or assist others in improving their own. We continue to strive for progress, not perfection and think with your participation we can continue to do better.

Share your go-to household sustainability tips with us, and let's inspire each other to create positive change! Whether it's a clever way to reduce waste or an energy-saving hack, we want to know. Hopefully we can share some great tips with our community.

📸 Snap a photo showcasing your tip in action, jot down a quick description, and send them to Brooke.Danaher2@education.vic.gov.au. Let's amplify our collective efforts and make a real difference, one practical tip at a time.

Event  -  'A Plastic Ocean'

A free movie event. Thursday 28th September, 6:30-9pm. A Plastic Ocean is an award-winning feature-length documentary created by a group of dedicated scientists, film-makers, social entrepreneurs, scholars, environmentalists and journalists. It explores the fragile state of our oceans and uncovers alarming truths about the consequences of our disposable lifestyle.  Showing at the Knox Community Arts Centre.

Important dates in September:

1st – First Day of Spring: A great opportunity to reflect on the changes in the landscape over Winter and predict how the landscape will change in the coming months.

1st – National Wattle Day: The golden wattle only became the official floral emblem of Australia in 1988, but Wattle Day has been observed since way back in 1899, before the nation was even federated.  Wattle Day falls on September 1st, the first day of spring, which reinforces the flower’s status as a symbol of new growth, renewal and fresh beginnings.

4th – National Walk to Work Day: Leave the car at home and walk to Solway! If you can’t walk the whole way, try parking a few streets back or giving public transport a go!

7th – National Threatened Species Day: National Threatened Species Day is a day when we shine a spotlight on all the Australian native animal and plant species that are facing similar fates to that of the Tasmanian tiger. Today we celebrate our iconic Aussie wildlife and the incredible conservation work to restore our environment is our mission to Regenerate Australia

16th - International Day of the Preservation of the Ozone Layer: In 1987 representatives from 24 countries met in Montreal and announced to the world that it was time to stop destroying the ozone layer. In so doing, these countries committed themselves, via the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, to rid the world of substances that threaten the ozone layer.

On December 19th, 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed September 16th to be the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date when the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed in 1987. The day was first celebrated on September 16th, 1995.

18th - Water Monitoring Day: World Water Monitoring Day was created by America’s Clean Water Foundation in 2003 with the intent of being a program that reached out to people all over the globe to raise awareness of water pollution issues and get people to test their local bodies of water.

18th – 24th- National Organic Week: Increase awareness of the benefits of organic products and farming production systems and accelerate the uptake of these in the wider Australian community and environment.
