Senior School Art

The Year 12 Visual Communication and Design students have presented their Pitch presentations for their School Assessed Task, where they are to present two communication needs for a client in which they are to design and create two final presentations from two design fields of their choice. Students then gathered feedback from an audience and their peers, to then reflect on the feedback and refine their designs before commencing their final presentations. Below are images of each students’ presentations and mock-ups for their SAT:

The Year 12 Art: Creative Practice students have been working on their School-Assessed Task for 2023. After presenting their critique for Unit 4 to the class and reflected on the feedback they received, students then refined their techniques, process and materials in their chosen art form/s for their SAT. After another series of trials and experimentation based on their art issue/theme, students explored a range of artist techniques and processes and began the refinement of those skills for their Creative Practice and documented the progress in their visual diaries. Students have begun making their final artworks and will present them at our Arts and Design Show evening, which in be early in Term 4. Below are some progress images of their trials before commencing their final artwork.

The Year 7,8 and 9 VCD students are currently designing the exterior and interior of a pop-up shop concept. Each student is creating their own 3D model, 3D planometric drawing and using the application ‘Sketch up’; to create their own shop designs. Below are student’s mood boards they created as part of their investigation for their Summative Assessment Task and developmental sketches and concepts of their chosen pop-up shop idea.

On Thursday 10 August, the Year 10, 11 and 12 VCE Art Students went on an excursion to the Tarra Warra Museum of Art in the Yarra Valley, where students viewed an exhibition called ‘The Soils Project’. Here students learnt about how to present their own artworks for an audience in a gallery space and how each artwork is portrayed to the viewer through different meaning and messages. In these artworks in the gallery, we saw how the artist’s personal life and culture had a dramatic impact on their artwork. Students then had to reflect on the exhibition before having lunch. Here are some images from the excursion below:

New gallery space is currently being renovated and redesigned by our Art teachers. Please email or write to us if you have any ideas which we can put in this space:

Junior School Art

Students from Grade 4 and 5, collaborated on a set of posters on an assembly topic – Habit 6: Synergise. The term synergy comes from the Attic Greek word synergia from synergos, meaning "working together". Our students created these posters as an early finisher’s activity with a lot of pride and enthusiasm. At the beginning and at the end, they reflected on the quotes given on the topic, generating a lot of positive discussion. Attached please find some photos of my students in action.

Performing Arts

In Performing Arts, as part of the Elaborate and Explain Phases, the students in Years 3 and 4 have been creating their own musical compositions using Chrome Music Lab. The students engaged in an experiment inspired by Wassily Kandinsky, an artist who compared painting to making music. This digital platform in Chrome Music Lab, turns anything you draw – lines, circles, triangles, or scribbles into sound. Students participated in a guided exploration using Chrome Music Lab, where they examined pitch, rhythm and melody through Art. Students created their own Kandinsky inspired artwork, which they then transferred into Chrome Music Lab to hear its melody. The musical compositions were highly original, inspired and meaningful.

On 22 August, Oakleigh Grammar held their annual Soiree. Students studying a musical instrument across our Junior, Middle and Senior schools participated in this event. The performers were brave, expressive and joyful as they shared their developing musical skills to a warm and inviting audience. Congratulations to all our musicians on their wonderful performances, to see the such a variety of instruments, abilities and talents from our students was a joyous experience for all.
